(Oh c’mon, you know he writes with one.) Here we are, still reeling from the shocking death of youngest Crawley daughter Sybil just three weeks ago. And now, tonight’s Downton Abbey season 4 dvd box setfinale dealt fans an even bigger blow when Downton heir Matthew Crawley, one half of “Downton’s” primary romance, was killed in an auto accident as he rushed home to share news of his and Mary’s newborn son. Just got done watching seasons 2 and 3 back t...Mom,
Just got done watching seasons 2 and 3 back to back over the past couple weeks. I enjoyed season 2 more than season 3. I think as a guy I enjoyed the back drop of the war, and how the snooty family bucked up and contributed their house and their time to the war. This is why I thought it ridiculous that Homeland won the Emmy over Downton Abbey for Outstanding Drama Series. Homeland is exciting, but it is so ridiculous. It makes Matthew's recovering from injury instantly look normal.

Anyway, I don't necessarily have a problem with Matthew dying, it just stinks. Him and Mary was the best part of the show. The direction they were going to take Downton and the future of the family was interesting to me.

I can't stand O'Brien and Thomas' meddling with Bates, although at times this year (in prison) he didn't seem quite as heroic and noble as he has before. Carson and Hughes are great, seems like they keep hinting at something between them, but of course they are proper servants and probably won't fool around. Although I'm sure the Granthams wouldn't have a problem with it. My point is I don't think the servant storylines are good enough to carry the show, so obviously they have to do something with Mary. I suppose Tom Branson will marry someone who we have been introduced to already. And I really have no idea what they will do with Edith.

No matter what, I love "the Dowager's" one-liners, and Mrs Patmore is great. Anna has been good with Bates too, so maybe that will become more of a positive focus.

PatrickAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14430187949622905664noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6271225.post-17755578645047839462013-02-20T12:31:51.548-06:002013-02-20T12:31:51.548-06:00I am pretty sure it was not confirmed. But then, it seemed he just left and it wasn't made clear either way.

But I could have easily missed something. Carson says "I was just thinking of Lady Sybil when she was this age."
Mrs. Hughes replied, "All we can do now is cherish her bairn."
Carson straightened up and said, characteristically, " Well, there's no need to get sentimental.". Hahaha.

Such a wonderful show! I realized yesterday the last show where I felt so invested in the characters was Gilmore Girls. My absolute favorite moment of ...Almost to 200. :)

My absolute favorite moment of the episode was when Carson had baby Sybil and told Mrs Hughes "I remember holding her mother just like this.". Tears came to my eyes as I thought of the sweet reality of life which passes so quickly. Though fictional, the family and servants at DA represent a time when stability was more the norm and one could live one's entire life in one place surrounded by multiple generations of a family. Mr Carson's life changes so little from day to day, year to year, decade to decade and he LIKES it that way. The older I get, the more I appreciate that kind of stability. :)

I DO think Mrs. Crawley knew what the doctor intended and headed him off at the pass to spare them both the embarrassment of a proposal she would not accept. I'm anxious to see how she handles Matthew's death, but I anticipate it will b with quiet strength. Will the Dowager even show kindness to her grieving nemesis?
