I can see the writers on DA jumping all over that plot line. How could they resist? I don't see how they can possibly bring in one more single parent child into the story line, so I'm not sure she will make it out of the first trimester. So glad that envelope opener was found. Clever twist Don't understand how Cora would end up with such a flat/risky maid, you'd think Anna would have been promoted...what draws Cora to such stern, serious maids? She must have done something bad to lose her last job so that she is indebted to Thomas for this new job. I have a feeling he must be keeping a secret of hers. I don't want Tom to leave. You really had to be paying attention to see it. I feel like she's on the edge of a nervous breakdown. Sheesh.

I loved this episode - Scott said that it wasn't a barn burner, and I agree, but somehow these quieter filler-episodes seem to charm me just as much. Just a few late-to-the-conversation observations:

-Rose is growing on me. Maybe it's because she's out from under the heel of that ridiculous mother that she's grown up and calmed down [at least relationally/tantrum-wise] - if that makes any sense.

-I'm really cheering for Mary. I really, really like her - maybe more now than ever. Something about her needing to be an overcomer and carrying on as a single mom has made her become a bit more heroic and sympathetic for me.

-the nursery scene was one for the ages. Oh. My. 'Aren't we the lucky ones'. Indeed. The blessing of perspective from the most 'mature' widow -- wow. wow. wow. [And my youngest's middle name is Reginald, after my Scott's beloved New Testament professor (who was English, I think, and who translated Bonhoeffer "Life Together" from the original German in the 1930's!) , so we liked the shout out of an unusual name. :)]

-I. Love. Old. Lady. Grantham. SO MUCH.

-Scott and I did some research on this Senator Fall who was alluded to regarding Cora's brother - Teapot Dome Scandal - Financial nightmare of the 20's. Will be interesting to see how this unfolds.

For Donna: One source of blue colouring throughout history has been indigo, and woad (Isatis tinctoria) was its source in Europe. It was a plant. So 'Painted with Woad' was like war stripes. And the howling was part of the attack. Or celebration. ;)stephseefhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10651078191088887064noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6271225.post-85600449676970494252014-02-04T07:16:38.042-06:002014-02-04T07:16:38.042-06:00Noses and ears keep growing. Personally I liked it when he was teamed with O'Brien, or when they were working against each other - but then it got really nasty towards the end of Season 3. I thought I would miss O'Brien more, but not so much.

Thomas obviously didn't have a good upbringing, and the vulnerable side of him only showed up when he was about to be kicked out of the Abbey without a reference. Now that he is under-butler he is back to "normal". If I were a shrink I'd say he spies on everybody to have power and is making up for all his insecurity.

Perhaps I over-think the show, hmmm? hehe Susanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08274481412344071315noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6271225.post-36263878627741755252014-02-03T23:50:18.919-06:002014-02-03T23:50:18.919-06:00sipping my first cup of coffee of the day ... (One time in S3, Mary asks Edith how her new maid is working out and Edith replies "not well" or such. Another time, Mary asks Anna if she can help Rose while they're in London so Edith/Rose's maid can stay in Downton with Edith.) As for Patrick, 1. Mary never seems to like him saying she only would have married him if nothing better came a long & she felt bad not caring enough to truly mourn him. 2. It wasn't Patrick that came to Downton, but a fake and Mary never believed it was him...so why would she talk to him? Edith, wanted to believe it was him, she did love him, so she talked to him a great deal and never saw through the hoax.
