A real live Christmas Miracle brought to you by The Bloggess

I followed along and read posts out loud to the girls about this touching story over the weekend.

I am sure that no one is more surprised than The Bloggess that her simple act of kindness blossomed into
a beautiful bouquet of love and hope that has touched thousands of lives.

I'm glad I caught wind of it on Twitter.

My heart is touched when I see how people love one another.
Yes, this is a a cruel and painful world,
but it is also filled with so much compassion and tenderness for others.

Guess what last night was?

Time to bake the cookies!
Everyone loves Patrick's Iced Cut Outs.

For her birthday treat at school, Katie likes to take her daddy's cookies to school.
It's become a tradition.

I mix the dough the night before.
Katie and her dad do the rolling (Patrick), cutting (Katie),
placing on sheet (Patrick), Icing (Patrick) and sprinkling (Katie).

We have a nice system goin'....

DSC_1920

Today Katie will get to hand out cookies to her classmates. (two each)
Then she gets to go to the other rooms and give cookies to all the other teachers.
After that, she will go downstairs and give cookies to the Principle and the Secretary.
Can't forget them.

It's a good day to be Katie.

Besides the cookies and the birthday...

It's Show your Badger Spirit day at school!!!

You know, every morning I watch Regis and Kelly.

It all started when I was in the hospital with my ruptured appendix in 1989.
Emma was a wee thing, only one month old.
The boys and Emma were all being taken care of by church friends and my sister Nancy.
I was in the hospital on the morphine pump; sick, lonely and stunned.

Regis was my ray of light.

It all started in the hospital those horrible days so long ago...

and I have never strayed.

They really do crack me up and I couldn't keep this little exchange to myself.

Isn't everything better when shared?

Katie spotted a heart shaped spill of chocolate on the kitchen table.

She felt it was important to share it with me so she pinned it on my bulletin board.

DSC_1887

We are so much alike. The sweet ways....and the not so great ways.

This is not good when it comes to her school work. What she doesn't get. I often don't get.
We have to get Patrick involved.
If he is not around, I tell her to tell her teacher, it is too hard for her mother.

I am not proud. it's a dumb book.

****

One more thing to share...

This is my favorite song to listen to in the car!

My car dancing cracks Katie up!

Raise your glass by Pink.

(I have been informed that there is swearing in this song.
Ask my kids... I don't ever hear the swear words in songs.
I usually cant understand the lyrics.

smokeymorning copy

It's usually too icy to stop and too cold to get out of the car lately.
But our mornings can be so beautiful and pink and interesting.

This morning as I waited for the Target/Starbucks to open I took a little detour.
Down an un-named road that heads to the new Aldi's and Taco Bell I went.

The smoke from the chimneys is especially noticeable and pretty when it is -9 degrees.

I tried my best with my cell phone.

Peaceful, no?

Yesterday I was lucky enough to go out to lunch with some friends.
We went out for Thai. Nancy brought her girls, this unnamed woman brought her adorable unnamed child,
and I brought my camera.

Our visit was way too short but it was really fun!

DSC_1863-4

This little guy was rambunctious and a little shy but I tried my hardest to make friends with him.
He gave me this smile just as they were leaving.

It made my day!

I think I would like to go out to lunch every week. Don't you think that sounds like a nice plan?

I can be the lady who lunches.

It's my calling, I think.

It's a marshmallow world in the winter,
When the snow comes to cover the ground,
It's the time for play, it's a whipped cream day,
I wait for it all year round.

I switched a little switch in my camera and went from vivid to normal color saturation...and I really like what I'm seeing.
It seemed this time of year the only thing vivid did was exaggerate the color casts.

I do not shoot infants on vivid either.
I'm all about easy editing and if I can remember to set my camera up right when I'm shooting,
my images turn out some much better right out of camera!

This table makes me immensely more joyful and filled with peace than the tree does.

I know. I am weird.

It's long.

It was made by a woman here in Madison. She was selling stings of garland at the school bazzar.

I rarely buy things like this....
I'm happy I did.

Generosity, Simplicity, Tradition and Love.

A very good day on the home front.

Just a regular day, filled with regular things.
Really Really special regular things.

This beautiful chicken pie was a gift.

DSC_1663-8

At Bible study on Wednesday a woman named Mary said she had something in the car for me.
I couldn't imagine. When I left she came out with me and reached into her van and pulled out this pie.

She had wanted to bring me a meal last spring when Sue died. Her church has a chicken pie sale every year and she thought of me.

I could not have been more thankful and blessed by this beautiful gift!
It means so much to me.

I made it for dinner Wednesday night and we all loved it.
Yesterday I had more for lunch and I will eat it again today.

(The gravy is gone...I will need to do something about that ;o)

But every time I have a slice of chicken pie, I will think of the kindness of Mary A.

It makes me want to bless someone else with the gift of a chicken pie and tender thoughts.

***

I padded around the house in a pair of my hand knit socks.
(baby it's cold inside)

These socks remind me of my father. They look like Neapolitan ice cream. He liked that.

Katie had basketball practice until 5:00 and then she had to be at the Christmas Concert at 6:00....
Even if it wasn't snowing and the streets were filled with cars and at a standstill...I had planned on bringing Katie her clothes and pretty much camping out in the church until the concert.

I sat in my seat and worried that Patrick wouldn't get there on time (tradition).

But he got there in plenty of time and all was well.

On the way home from Columbia, Missouri, we travel thru Iowa on 151. Twenty minutes before we got to Dubuque Katie spotted an eagle flying very low. We all looked and we were amazed and thrilled with what we saw:
A large group of eagles eating something in the corn field. (a convocation of eagles)

Patrick made a quick u-turn and we got out of the car to watch them.

What a wonderful, glorious thing to see. In the middle of Iowa.

Thrilling.

(As you can tell, I had my 50 mm lens on my camera and that was NOT good enough for this distance. Emma's point and shoot actually did better than my camera. I will ask her to send a picture so I can put it up for you to see.)

"Surely we can do for one day that which seems impossible for a lifetime. "

Di left this quote in the comments yesterday.

God gives us the strength to get thru today.

And then tomorrow, He will give us strength for that day.

A Christmas Meme....Repeat.

DSC_0772-2

I posted this questionnaire five years ago on this blog.

Lots of people have come and gone since then,
I thought you might enjoy thinking about your Christmas favorites and memories on this
frosty Friday morning.

A Christmas Meme

1. Hot Chocolate or apple cider?

Iced Grande Nonfat Chai please.

2. Turkey or Ham?
Lately it's been Tenderloin.

3. Do you get a fake or real-you-cut-it-yourself Christmas tree?
Real tree. A must.

Very few. One very nice wreath :o)
A Christmasy flag.
Sometimes a few lights on shrubs.

5. Snowball fights or sleddin'?
Sledding

7. Do you enjoy going downtown shopping?
I would prefer an outdoor mall....like Oakbrook to an inside mall.

8. Favorite Christmas song?
I like most hymns sung in the Christmas season. Big loud singing by a whole church!
Songs that everyone remembers, loves and delights in singing.
Especially when we light the little white candles.

10. How do you feel about Christmas movies?
Love 'em.

11. When is it too early to start listening to Christmas music?
I prefer to wait until just a few days before Christmas.

After.

13. Carolers, do you or do you not watch and listen to them?
Very....very....rarely do we get carolers!!!

In-laws come to our house on Christmas Eve.
As children our parents hosted the Christmas Eve party...many of us Glyman girls have continued this tradition.

15. Do you read the Christmas Story? If so when?
My favorite thing is when Katie's whole school recites Luke during the Christmas program.

16. What do you do after presents and dinner?
Watch television...usually sports...
I look around for a movie to watch.

17. What is your favorite holiday smell?
Fresh winter air.

18. Ice skating or walking around the mall?
I hate walking around the mall.
I wish I could skate like I use to.

19. Do you open a present or presents on Christmas Eve, or wait until Christmas day?
We do the relative exchange on Christmas Eve.
Family presents in the morning.

20. Favorite Christmas memory?
When Katie was born...and we came home on Christmas morning.

21. Favorite Part about winter?
How pretty it looks.
Sleeping with the window open and having a cold face and warm bod.

22. Ever been kissed under mistletoe?
Sure.
Once or twice.

DSC_0826-2

My favorite thing about Christmas are the homecomings, and the love,
and baby Jesus.

Please feel free to answer all or just some of the questions and post them in the comments or on your own blog.
We use to have loads of fun doing these memes back in the day.

Winding Wool

She'd bring to me a skein of wool
And beg me to hold out my hands;
so on my pipe I cease to pull
And watch her twine the shining strands
Into a ball so snug and neat,
Perchance a pair of socks to knit
To comfort my unworthy feet,
Or pullover my girth to fit.

As to the winding I would sway,
A poem in my head would sing,
And I would watch in dreamy way
The bright yarn swiftly slendering.
The best I liked were coloured strands
I let my pensive pipe grow cool . . .
Two active and two passive hands,
So busy wining shining wool.

Alas! Two of those hands are cold,
And in these days of wrath and wrong,
I am so wearyful and old,
I wonder if I've lived too long.
So in my loneliness I sit
And dream of sweet domestic rule . . .
When gentle women used to knit,
And men were happy winding wool.

~Robert William Service

Those last four lines are my favorites.

Since we girls had plans for Friday afternoon, I suggested a little outing for Friday morning.
I didn't think Patrick wanted to sit in the nest all day. Since Patrick likes to go for drives around Wi. I thought the short drive to the Burr Oak would be welcome.

It was greeted with as much enthusiasm as when I insisted we climb to the top of this....

(St. Peter's in Rome.)

Sometimes you just have to listen to me.
I know things.

Like what you need to do when you go places.

Seriously. I know things.

I told the girls, when we were in Rome, "We really need to go to the top. You will never regret it! And every time you see this building for the rest of your life, you will be able to say...I climbed the 400 steps to the top of that amazing building.!"

Take it from me.

Now the burr oak.

Not quite the same as St. Peters.....but....more memorable than watching television.

Ya gotta make memories.

I will remember that it was windy and cold and that Patrick wanted to leave after about one minute...

and how Katie liked to run around and jump on the tree and climb on it's roots....

She has all this ten year old energy, you see. The tree was good for her.

Then we went down to the river where Patrick and Katie and I got out and took a look at the river.
Katie and Patrick climbed on rocks.

Cindy and Emma stayed in the car. They said if my camera was staying in the car, they were too.

Funny.
