Bittersweet

I think my blog should be called bittersweet. Because life is just so.

Today I will tell you about two things.

One so sweet and silly.

One so sad.

First the silly. My sister Cindy loves the Wienermobile. Loves it!
Cindy entered a contest to have a dream come true.

Guess what she asked for?

A ride on the Wienermobile!!!

She won!

And today is the big day. The Wienermobile is picking her up at her home, and driving her to school where she is a kindergarten teacher. Can you imagine the excitement???

How I wish I could be there to see Cindy in the Wienermobile!!!

Go Cindy Go!!! Do-do-do-do. (That's the Wienermobile whistle :o)

(I hope to have a picture of this for you all to see....and for me to see!)

Dreams do come true.
Silly, Sweet dreams :o)

And what can be more bitter than death?

I learned yesterday afternoon that our dear Aunt Betty died.
Aunt Betty was our mother's youngest sister.(60)

My heart is breaking over her passing.
She was such a spitfire!

She was passionate about life, and nature, and so warm and loving.

She was a lot like our mother.... and with her goes part of our mother.

She and our mother would laugh so hard over the morning funnies...
They were such good sisters.

A few years ago, Betty suffered a stroke and was homebound.

I blogged for her.

I blogged to encourage her and to share the comings and goings of our whole family.
I hoped she wouldn't be so lonely in Colorado...with a little, daily visit with family.

I am so sad that she is gone.

My hope is in the Lord.

My prayers are especially for Aunt Barb-her loving sister and Johnny and Kelly-Betty's children.

Ah life.

We must live it now.
Live it well.
Live it with love.

Very Exciting News

Do you remember the little blurb on the blog I wrote about Emma wishing to spread her wings....

Well, dear friend, Lynn in Wi, emailed me soon after she read that entry and mentioned that she knew a wonderful missionary family in England. Would Emma possibly be interested in a trip to England???

Since this whole idea just plopped in our laps... Emma and I had to give it some thought. Four days later we were ready to ask Lynn to talk to her friends. Which she did.

They were very open and willing to have Emma come to visit them!!!!

Emma and I have been emailing back and forth with the Waldeckers for the last three weeks...and....

I purchased the airline ticket yesterday!

Emma is definitely going to England this summer!!!

All of the details have fallen into place so well. Emma will just act as part of their family (six children) and do what they do...and serve where they serve...

She is excited....well, as excited as our calm Emma gets.

I'm the giddy one :op

We feel so blessed!!!

By the way, Emma will be in Manchester.

Have you been there?

Travel Notes

If I were in Washington State...this is where I would be this weekend!

Skagit Valley Tulip Festival

Drenna...you must go!
Janice, have you been?

At this time of the year, every year, I wish I had planted tulips in the fall.
But fall comes around and I forget how much I want some tulips in the spring.

Gotta work on that short term reward thing.

Here in the Madison area, we have long stretches of roads that are lined with trees.
It is one of my favorite things to notice the buds each week as I drive Katie to ballet.
Two weeks ago, the trees were but big brown twigs.
This week there is definitely a light green glow.

I'll take a picture next time we head over that way.
It's really pretty!

Wishing you a warm and fantastic weekend!
And if it can't be warm in temp...I hope it's warm with love!

Amy @ Good Soil posted this meme yesterday....
and since it had the number FIVE in it, I thought we could us it for the

Friday Five

How does that sound?

1. Five minutes to yourself: how would you spend them, ideally?
Knitting a few rows.

2. Five bucks to spend right now: how would you spend it?
Right now...I would buy Katie and Emma each a doughnut for breakfast. This would make Katie very happy.

3. Five items in your house you could part with, right now, that you hadn't thought of already?
Clothes that are too small for Katie, broken television sitting in the basement, broken snow blower sitting in the back yard, some of my shoes that I am holding on to, high chair.

4. Five items you absolutely, positively could never part with in your house?
Photos
My mother's bread knife
My reading glasses
First edition hardbacks of To Kill a Mockingbird and The Princess Bride
Any remnants of our parents

5. Five words you love?
Lovely
True
Daisy
(I'm really searching here. I can't think of words this morning. Amy thought of great words!)
I laugh when I hear the word...

No Pink Eye!

Hooray!

I awoke this morning without crusties and the redness is almost all gone!

Thank you for your concern, advice and prayers.

Here are the home remedies I tried;

I ran to Walgreens early in the day (before a few of the other suggestions came in) and bought Soft Contact Lens Solution for $3.99.
Around dinner time, I tried cotton balls soaked in boiled salted water. (I put them on my eye, I did not eat them for dinner :o)
Right before bed, Emma dropped some more Contact Lens Solution in my eyes. (We did both eyes just for good measure)

Let me tell you, Emma and I are not accustomed to putting things in our eyes. She laughed so hard at me because I jerked and blinked so violently when she came at me with those big drops :o)

Plop.

Giggle.

Snort.

It didn't take much to make us laugh last night.
We had the oddest, hysterical thing happen to us on the way home from Bible study.

We left our friend's home at about 9:30. Emma suggested she drive because my eye was looking droopy. We pulled onto the highway and were speeding along when suddenly an opossum scurried across the road. Emma shrieked and swerved.

Clunk.

Splash.

"Oh gross! I've got guts on my hand" I yell frantically.

"What!" exclaims Emma, "How could that be?"

In the excitement of the moment, I thought the opossum guts had magically splattered through the shifting column...

Ewwww!!!

I quickly realized that I was not covered with opossum guts...but Diet Dr. Pepper.

Emma laughed til her stomach hurt.

I dried myself off and giggled at my silliness.

Emma felt badly for the opossum, but I was just glad I was not covered in guts.

Encourage one another and drive safely :o)

Pondering...

Do I have pink eye?

Is my eye reacting to the new mascara I put on for the first time yesterday afternoon?

Or did I get something in my eye during my sleep...and it irritated it so much I have swelling.

Do I really have to go to the doctor today to resolve this?

I woke up in the middle of the night with pain in my eye, like lots of eyelashes were poking in. I rubbed and rubbed. It scratched badly when I closed my eye. So I got out of bed and went to look in the mirror. I couldn't see anything obvious so I made sure all of my eyelashes were pointing in the right direction and went back to bed. Still my eye had a little pain but I was able to fall asleep.

This morning that eye was crusted a tiny bit, my eyelids are swollen and my eyeball is a little pink.
My eye is not gritty.
Just a slight tenderness under the lower eyelid.

Dare I wait another day to see if this clears up on it's own?

Aren't these the hardest medical things to decide? That in between...not sure if it's necessary to go....time.

So those of you who have dealt with pink eye...does this sound like the beginning of pink eye? Or just an irritated eye?

Okay...now that I have grossed you out.

Here is a lovely picture by Margaret Tarrant for your enjoyment

March of the Penguins

I'm glad we waited until Spring to see this movie. I don't think I would have the heart to watch it in the winter.

Burrr....

We all enjoyed this documentary very much.
My only complaint was the mushy personification.

I just don't believe the penguins feel a whole lot of love and joy as the narrator would have us believe.

But boy, those babies were CUTE!

And how about that scary Tiger Seal.
Who knew a seal could be so monstrous looking. Yikes.

The seals at our zoo are silly clowns. Not fierce seals like the one that was shown in the movie. Wow!

We had a very nice Easter. We missed the boys...but at least they were together in Omaha.
I think this was our first Easter without the boys home.

I didn't dwell on it tho...and enjoyed present company :o)

Paulie (Patrick's brother) has been with us this weekend. He is always rather fun to have around. We had a nice dinner with Patrick's sister and her family. Yummy ham and Au Gratin potatoes.

Katie was delighted to play with her cousins for two afternoons in a row.

We went to church in a wild hail storm.
And sang two song that made me cry, big embarrassing tears...in public.

In Christ Alone by Stuart Townend

There in the ground His body lay,
Light of the world by darkness slain;
Then bursting forth in glorious Day,
Up from the grave He rose again!
And as He stands in victory,
Sin’s curse has lost its grip on me,
For I am His and He is mine—
Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

and

He lives!

"You ask me how I know He lives....
He lives within my heart"

Happy Easter!

How deep the Father's love for us,
How vast beyond all measure
That He should give His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure

How great the pain of searing loss,
The Father turns His face away
As wounds which mar the chosen One,
Bring many sons to glory

Behold the Man upon a cross,
My sin upon His shoulders
Ashamed I hear my mocing voice,
Call out among the scoffers

It was my sin that held Him there
Until it was accomplished
His dying breath has brought me life
I knoww that it is finished

I will not boast in anything
No gifts, no power, no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ
His death and resurrection

Why should I gain from His reward?
I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart
His wounds have paid my ransom

Lyrics - Stuart Townend

He is risen. He is risen, indeed.

Once upon a time there lived a little girl named Donna who lived in a little red brick ranch. It was Halloween time and the school had put on a party and a haunted house in their big gym. Little Donna came home with a bag of candy and a small plastic skull with shiny white rhinestones for eyes.

One night, as she played alone in her bedroom with the glowing skull, she picked the rhinestone out of the skull and placed it gently into her nose.

She immediately tried to get it out of her nose. But it was stuck.
Her nose started to bleed and she ran for her mom.

The rhinestone eye was cleverly hidden and Donna and her mommy had to go out into the dark night and meet the Doctor at his office.

Holding a large towel on her face, Donna told her mommy how the glass eye ended up in her nose.

Donna told a whopper, "Well, I was lying on my back, looking at the skull and the eye just fell in."

"That is very odd. Are sure you didn't put it in your nose?" ask the Mommy.

"Well, maybe.... I kinda.... put it in my nose."

Into the empty office they went. It was very quiet. The Doctor was waiting for them in his small office. He shone a bright light into Donna's face and picked out that little rhinestone that was hiding in her nose.

Donna and her mommy drove home and Donna went right to bed.
Donna resolved never to put things in her nose, ever again.
And she didn't.

Ya know what I remember most about that night? I remember how unusual it felt to be going out, into the dark, with my mother.

We just didn't go places after dinner on a school night.

Some things have really changed for children.

But some things never change, like;

How bad it feels to lie.

And how children like to stick things in their noses.

Looking forward to reading your escapades!

I'll bet you didn't know I was a big chicken. Well I am.

Here is an example of what I am afraid of....and maybe you all can help me.

On my birthday, my longest friend, emailed me and told me she was expecting twins. Such fantastic news.

I emailed her and expressed my delight.

Seven months passed..and I start wondering how my friend is doing.
Has she had the babies?
Why haven't I heard anything?
Is everything okay?

This is the point where I morph into a chicken.
I am too afraid to call or write.
I am afraid I will hear bad news and bring pain to my friend by asking.

So I do nothing.

Does anyone else feel this way? If you were in this situation, what would you do? What do you do?

(It so happens that Cathy emailed me this morning. The babies were born on Valentines day. A boy and a girl! She had many complications with the birth.

She said she sent me an announcement which came back to her..."address unknown". (weird, huh?)

I am so thankful to know that the babies have arrived...and that all is very well!

But, I don't want to be a chicken anymore.

I called him Uncle Moo Moo.

You don't know how many times our parents came home from dinner's with Uncle Marv and Aunt Dorothy and our mother would have three, four, five pieces of silverware hidden in her purse. She would be just mortified that Marv had done this to her again! I remember thinking it was pretty funny :o)

Uncle Marv smoked a pipe too. You never forget the person who smokes a pipe.

And he drove fast and fabulous cars. He had a Mercedes 450 SL in the mid 60's. Once I came home from a visit in Michigan with him. We drove late one rainy night.
I was tucked in the back (where there is really only a little perch and not a seat) supposedly sleeping. But instead, I was peering over Uncle Marv's shoulder, terrified as I watched the windsheild wipers whisk and the speedometer race to 100 mph.

He was a little crazy!

In even bigger news, I finished Anna Karenina this morning.

The character's depth and introspection was very appealing to me.

I started skimming the political discussions near the end of the book.

And searched for Levin and Anna and Vronsky and Kitty's names.

When Kitty was just about to go into labor (which is the height of fascination for me) Tolstoy took us away to about 8 chapters of political talk. There was no way I was going to wade through all of that!

Was Tolstoy building suspense?

Well...if he was, I didn't go for it...I was like a person walking through a crowded hall, making a bee line to the door and shoving people aside like little clown punching bags!

The birthing chapters did not disappoint.

Levin, the agnostic, prays;

'Lord have mercy! Pardon and help us!' he repeated the words that suddenly and unexpectedly sprang to his lips. And he, an unbeliever, repeated those words not with his lips only. At that instant he knew that neither his doubts nor the impossibility of believing with his reason-- of which he was conscious--at all prevented his appealing to God. It all flew of like dust. To whom should he appeal, if not to Him in whose hands he felt himself, his soul, and his love, to be?'

Levin searches his soul for the meaning of life (among other things) until the last page in the book.

It is interesting to note the fate of Anna who loved herself most and did not think of others. And Levin who was always mindful of others.

I am reading the Norton Critical Edition of Anna Karenina so I have many essays to look at before I return this book to the library. I think I will spend a little more time with this book...to think on it's themes.

The Wind

By Harold Monro

So wayward is the wind to-night
'Twill send the planets tumbling down;
And all the waving trees are light
In gauzes wafted from the moon.

Faint streaky wisps of roaming cloud
Are swiftly from the mountains swirl'd;
The wind is like a floating shroud
Wound light above the shivering world.

I think I see a little star
Entangled in a knotty tree,
As trembling fishes captured are
In nets from the eternal sea.

There seems a bevy in the air
Of spirits from the sparkling skies:
There seems a maiden with her hair
All tumbled in my blinded eyes.

O, how they whisper, how conspire,
And shrill to one another call !
I fear that, if they cannot tire,
The moon, her shining self, will fall.

Blow ! Scatter even if you will
Like spray the stars about mine eyes !
Wind, overturn the goblet, spill
On me the everlasting skies !

A wild and wooly Spring has come to Wisconsin.
We are still waiting for the sunshine!

April Fools Day is a special knitting holiday around cyberspace. It's called Flash Your Stash.

I was reminded by my morning visit to Wendy's @ Knit and Tonic.

Go and see her stash of yarn.

Even if you don't knit.

Really go see her picture!

So being a good little knitter-photographer I went in search of my stash.

Guess what?

I do not have ONE ball of yarn in my stash.

I am stashless.

Ah well :o)

Katie took a picture of my empty hands and for the second day in a row my photo host is not working for us. Patrick worked on it for over an hour...

So I need some advice.

Are you happy with your photo host? Which one do you use? Is there a fee?

I am aware of flicker and photo bucket and the Blogger service.

I would greatly appreciate your opinions!

Oh...and it has to be easy to use :o)

Thanks :o)
