It was called Major Pettigrew's Last Stand. I just loved it and have waited for her second book.
The Summer Before the War is Helen's new book!
Isn't the cover cute?
I bought mine right away but haven't really started reading.
Jep wrote me last week and told me that she was reading it too!
And Susan, our Swiss Miss, got this cute copy in Europe!!
I would be happy to hear who is reading this, wondering if you would like to join us in reading it...
Maybe Jep can lead a discussion of sorts?
Discuss.
Donna
I just placed a hold on it at the library! Yay!
ReplyDeleteI'm in!
ReplyDeleteThis might be just what I need to get the reading bug back. I've wanted to do a book club... Now my question is this... paper or kindle? discuss. xoxo
ReplyDeleteHolding a book in my hands is one of the first things I remember from my childhood. I always choose paper over electronic. Nostalgic, I guess.
DeletePaper. I love real books.
DeleteDo I need to read the first? Or am I set in jumping in with The Summer Before?
DeleteCompletely different story. Begin with Summer!!
DeleteI love paper, but will read on Kindle half the time because it is easier.
DeleteFor this book, Summer before the War, I knew I had to read it in hardback.
ALWAYS real books! I'm always that person that likes to put her bookmark at the end of a chapter. --Jamie
DeleteThe surprising thing I like about print books is the ease of giving them away. I have a kindle for travel, but my favorite for travel is audiobooks. My library works with an app called Overdrive that lets me download audiobooks, and they automatically check back in when time is up. Audiobooks also make walks and housework pass more pleasantly!
DeleteMe, too. I'm on the wait list at the library and loved the first book/
ReplyDeleteI placed a hold on both these books. Maybe I'll be able to catch up and participate. I just finished The Nightingale on recommendation from Reese Witherspoon's instagram. Great book.
ReplyDeleteI am TWENTIETH on the waiting list at our library. But I have not read the first book yet, so I will take that on the road to the basketball tourney this weekend. I may just have to make an exception and buy a book if everyone takes their allowed three weeks checkout!
ReplyDeleteWhat darling book covers, both of them!
Di
I would love to read it with all of you!
ReplyDeleteI placed a library hold for this a few days ago, but it will be a while before I get it. :-( I even reserved the audiobook and the ebook, but am down the hold list on both. Looking forward to reading it! --Missy
ReplyDeleteI got it from our library, looking forward to reading it!
ReplyDeleteI love my UK cover! I am traveling and will start reading as soon as I get home! It was too heavy for my carry-on :-)
ReplyDeleteI adored Major Pettigrew xxx
I wonder why the cover is different? Heading over to the library to see if I can reserve a copy. :)
ReplyDeleteI loved Major Pettigrew and was so happy to hear this was coming out. I'll join in!
ReplyDeleteHow exciting to see so many of you want to read The Summer Before the War. I just finished it and I did not read Major Pettigrew....I tried and for some reason could not get into it. I will try again now that I know I really like the author. They are two separate books as Donna pointed out, you do not need to read the first to enjoy the second. In my research into the author I have found her to be likable, the kind of person I think would make a good friend. She did not get her first book published until she was 45. Several reviewers agreed with me that The Summer....is very "Downton Abbeyish. " And, here at the QLCS you don't need much to get started discussing. I have told Donna that I will send questions if needed, but a discussion leader is redundant with Donna at the helm. love and prayers, jep
ReplyDeleteYay for Jep! I read a book like I watch a movie. I just take it in.
ReplyDeleteThe thoughtful thinking and discussing parts are for those with bigger brains :op
Jep says the book is in three parts, perhaps we can break it up like that...over three weeks. Too fast? Too slow? Tell me do.
Starting next week? It's possible :)
DeleteI always appreciate your book recommendations. I listened to Major Pettigrew's Last Stand while walking.
