School's out. Summer fun.

Summer is here and school is out.
I am recovering.

As you know I do not think I am old.  I look at people my age and think,
they are pretty old.  And then I realize I am their age.  It's the weirdest thing I have ever experienced.
This aging thing.
At school I was nearly the oldest one.
(At home where no one sees me...I am in denial)
I was working for a 32 year old supervisor.
Could be my child.
Our neat art teacher was 22.
Could be my child.
Younger than three of my children.
Our students.  K-1's.
Could be my grandchildren.

In my head, I think we are peers.
And then I think of my age and look in the mirror. (and leave the house)

It does not fit.

I am older than Aunt Bee.

I'm recovering.

Trying to sleep past five.
Trying to stay up past nine.

I cried many tears on the last day as I said good-bye to a student.
(I grew very fond of the kids)
We said our good-byes and I'll miss yous....
And I had to walk back to class with big tears in my eyes.

I do not have a job next year.
I will look for something over the summer and if nothing comes up...
I will substitute like I started out doing in the beginning.

Next week, Katie and I will go watch Asher, Malachi and Ezekiel in Omaha while Matthew and Melinda go on a vacation to celebrate 10 years of marriage.  (Emma's going to come for the weekend too!)  We are going to have so much fun!!!

So this summer we will make memories.
Visit family.
Make a few college visits.
(For KATIE...since she will be a SENIOR)

Lots of those around here.

As Carl Reiner says,
"If you're not in the Obit,
eat breakfast."

As I tell myself,
Avoid mirrors,

Encourage one another,
Donna Elsie

I'm so middle name is coming back in style!

  1. Hi!!!

Enjoy summer, soak up the grand kiddos, make gorgeous pictures and tell us all about it!

I still feel 38, unless I have to walk uphill a lot ;-)

Elsie is a sweet name - and Mrs. Hughes' first name. Wait, that was at the turn of the century!!I

    Happy summer!

You are as young as you're young at heart! This was one of my favorite blogs you've written! You crack me up! Enjoy your summer vacation, travels and family visits! Let's get together when you return Pal :). Karen F.

  3. Ahha! This makes me smile. I was just bemoaning the fact that elderly men (as in older than me) have started to call me "young lady." They think it will make me feel better, I guess. I was never called a young lady in decades past.
I love how you love your students. Hoping you get a permanent job (if you want one)and that you have a sweet time with your girls and grandsons. And you know, you will just never be old. Full of years maybe, someday, but never old.

  4. Aging is the weirdest thing I've ever experienced, too! When I need to replace something or am out shopping, my mind goes to the......."This is guaranteed for ten years. I shouldn't have to replace it again as it should make it until I'm gone." Isn't that weird? I'm not sure when my brain flipped a switch to this mode, but it ain't pretty......

Enjoy your summer and make some marrrrrvelous memories, Donna!

  5. Your Katie is going to be a Senior in high school?!?!? Gosh time is just whipping by.

Hope you have a fun summer. :-)

  6. You are a peer-with wisdom. The goung ones need our friendship so very much. Xoxo

  7. Love this. As a fellow Class of 'xx grad, I am in denial right along with you. Wishing you a wonderful summer, Donna Elsie! Have a blast with those sweet boys! And college visits? It seems like just yesterday that I was doing that with Molly, but now she'll be a senior in college. Yikes!!

I do the exact same thing!! Think other people are so much older than me, then realize we are the same age, or that they are even younger. I look at my hands and think, they are starting to look like old-lady hands, when did that happen? I thought I had a bruise on the back of my leg the other day and realized it was a varicose vein .... what on earth?!?

I hear you ! My mind says I'm young but my body tells me otherwise! Let us grow old gracefully and enjoy this beautiful life ! We are blessed more than we deserve ! I
Also have three grandsons and I'm going to enjoy them all summer :) you do the same ! Katie college !!! Crazy ! Beckie from Kansas
Good to see you back on here!

  10. Me too, Miz Boo. I have to send you a message to tell you something big I am doing that TOTALLY and COMPLETELY belies my age. I love your posts. I knew you would have a good time this year. Most of all, I knew you would make a difference. You make a huge difference with the love you bring to the world. Trust me, I know world difference makers when I see them. I wish I could come to visit you. You will have so much fun with the grandkids. Kaish and I are going to his first college visit in July. I am crying already. Love to you.

  11. A child in a store mentioned me to his mom as "that old lady." In my mind I was the same age as his mom, but not in reality!

  12. You are so sweet, Donna. I bet the kids loved you. Today our youngest child graduated from our homeschool. Twenty seven years ago when we started this journey and I realized how old I would be when it was over it seemed so far away. This morning, I stood in the kitchen with my girl, who just turned 18, and couldn't believe how fast time went by. I am incredibly thankful for the years God gave me with my children. And...Katie is a senior?! I remember the first photo I ever saw of her and you in an article about blogs. It has been a joy to watch her grow up. Have fun with the grandkids! Enjoy the days. They really do go by fast.

Hello. So nice to see you. Would you like to leave a comment? Be very kind.
