Say Yes to the "dress".

With Emma's wedding creeping closer I needed to pick out something to wear.

In my mind, only one thing looks good on me.  My black Chico pants and a blousey (maternity) top.
I do not like cling.  I have not worn a dress or skirt in years as my big tummy just makes this impossible.  So I wear my black pants ( I have four pair) every day.
I'm okay with a uniform.  Really I am.  If someone hates this about me.  I really can't think about it.

It is, what it is.

So as I looked thru Nordstrom and J. Jill and Gap and Talbots and Neiman Marcus online...I kept putting dresses and tops in my checkout bag...but I couldn't do it.  I couldn't click 'buy'.

So Monday I ran to the local Talbots.  I tried on a pretty blue top I saw on the website...and they had the pretty blue shell to go with it.   I even picked out a rehearsal dinner blouse.

They fit.
I bought them.
I was happy.

But I had this strange feeling.  The feeling I was a Golden Girl.

Here is what I will be wearing.

I will wear black shoes.

Golden Girl or not.  I will be comfortable and happy.

Until Thursday.

When Kate Middleton wore this cream coat to her final engagement before baby #3 is born.

Now, granted, Kate is pregnant.... But she looks wonderful and not at all like a Golden Girl in a polyester pant suit.

It made me so very happy.
Thanks Kate for having superb style and helping me feel better about my wedding outfit.

In conclusion.
I'd rather look pregnant than old.

And as for Emma's dress.  It came last week, all the way from China.
It fits her absolutely perfectly.  I think it's gorgeous.
So, that's a big ....sigh.

Two weeks from today.
At this very moment.

For as long as they both shall live.

Squeeee!!!

  1. My daughter is getting married next February - such a loooong wait (they were engaged last July). She has her dress, bridesmaids have their dresses, but we have just started thinking mother-of-the-bride dresses. I said no beige and no lace jacket. I think the blue you picked out is absolutely beautiful, and the matching shell and jacket with scallops looks very chic to me!

  2. I wore very nice black slacks and a nice dusty rose flat silk blazer, with a shell underneath, to my older daughter's wedding, and felt great. I love your outfit. You will be glad that you chose "you".

My thought was "they'll all be remembering what the bride wore, not me" and I was right!

    Hugs

Susan, you are so right...no one looks at anyone other than the bride and groom. And, we all know Emma will be a beautiful bride! jep

  3. Hi Donna,
The color is lovely, and I love the jacket. I think it is called a topper coat. I think comfort is the way to go so you can focus on the rest of the wedding--not if your shoes hurt or if you have a run in your stockings.

I read fashion blogs, and read one you might like to read, too. It's written by a woman from Michigan who struggled to find clothes that fit and looked good for her apple shape. I love her sense of style and fun. It may give you good ideas of where to go to find clothes you like for the future so you don't feel bad or rushed. https://www.whenthegirlsrule.com/

Can't wait to see all the gorgeous photos of Emma's wedding. I'm so happy she's found someone who loves her and treasures her.

  4. Donna, I think your outfit looks great and looks great on you too! I stress about clothes all the time because I've never liked my body (even after I lost almost 100 pounds -- imagine that! -- so I know it's a much deeper issue), and what usually happens is when I'm the most comfortable, I have the best time. Even though I don't think that knowledge will stop my stress over what to wear beforehand, I hardly ever remember what I wore but how wonderful the event was! You look wonderful, and Emma's happiness will be so contagious, you'll glow!

Beautiful Mother of the Bride Donna, You are wise to go with comfort and look lovely. I wore almost that color blue to our youngest son's wedding and felt very stylish. You and Kate have such great fashion style sense or whatever you call it. So happy for Emma and James and the whole Boucher family. Thank you for sharing in the wedding experience with us! love and prayers, jep

  7. Your choice of outfit is wonderful! The blue looks really good on you, and comfort is key. When my daughter was getting married last fall, she suggested we go together to shop for dresses. She had worked at Nordstrom in the past, and still knew the personal shoppers. I was not at all comfortable with that idea but the shopper looked at both of us, and pulled several dresses out. My daughter and I were in a big dressing room, and we just had so much fun trying on dresses. Turns out she and I both fell in love with the first dresses the personal shopper had selected for us. We bought hers then and there, but I found one very similar to mine at Nordstrom's online site at a much cheaper price. There was no way I'd have enjoyed wearing a $300 dress!!!

I love the scalloped edge of your jacket- and the Wedgewood blue. You will look very stylish. I can't wait to see wedding photos! A good friend of ours ordered her wedding dress from China and it was one my favorite wedding dresses I have ever seen. I know Emma will be very beautiful!
