The Academy Award Fashion Blog.

Good morning!

Oh! What a night!

Almost everyone was beautiful last night.  Really.

I am going to show you the dresses that stood out to me.
I am not going to show the worst dressed because I think everyone who watched knows who it was...and I just don't want to pick on her.

So here we go....

Source: popsugar.com via Donna on Pinterest

This is Adele on the red carpet. Once again I love her style.

Source: mirror.co.uk via Donna on Pinterest

Here she is singing Skyfall.
She even won an Oscar for best song.
Good for her.

Love this look too.

BTW.  She is 5'9".... nearly six foot tall with her shoes on....

She has a great advantage wearing clothes being that height.

Source: fabsugar.com via Donna on Pinterest

This is very pretty.
Octavia Spencer.  This pale color really looks nice on her...
It just dark enough.
She reminds me of cotton candy in this dress :o)

Source: fabsugar.com via Donna on Pinterest

Amy Adams wore my favorite Oscar de la Renta.  It is my favorite style, isn't it?
I liked this very much but felt it was washed out and would have preferred a darker color.

Source: fabsugar.com via Donna on Pinterest

I love this silhouette.
Congratulations Anne for winning best actress.
Again...the color is so barely pink...you almost can't tell it is pink.
I was not a big fan...but I want to show you anyway.

Source: fabsugar.com via Donna on Pinterest

This is Jennifer Lawrence.  Her dress is Dior.
It is a great dress.  Again I think it had some pink in there.

This dress however made Jennifer trip and fall on the steps as she went up to get her award.
Poor honey.
She recovered well and well she should have as she is Hollywoods darling for some strange reason and she beat out fantastic actresses for playing a dopey easy role.
I'm still bitter.

Source: fabsugar.com via Donna on Pinterest

Oh my goodness. Reese Witherspoon, you look wonderful.
Her hair.  The color.  The fit and shape.
Really really great!
(wearing all Louis Vuitton)

Source: popsugar.com via Donna on Pinterest

So beautiful.

This is Kerry Washington.
Kerry wore this gorgeous color with such an interesting bodice.
Her dress is by Miu Miu.
This dress grew on me and made my list when I saw it on stage.

Yeah.  My dress would be a moomoo too.

Source: fabsugar.com via Donna on Pinterest

This is for those of you who just love the dresses with a little, ahem, cleavage.
It's Samantha Barks from Les Miserables.

I like it just fine.
It got my attention :op

Source: fabsugar.com via Donna on Pinterest

Here is Natalie Portman in the exact opposite dress as Samantha.
She wore this to the after party.  I happen to love this.  A lot.

I'm all for a big baggy dress on a tiny wisp of a girl.

Source: fabsugar.com via Donna on Pinterest

Stacey Kiebler-never-ate-a-cookie looks fantastic.
Halle Berry had a black dress with embellishments a little like this...and I hated that one....
But this dress is gorge on her.

Source: popsugar.com via Donna on Pinterest

Sally Field is really lovely to look at.  She is doing something right...or she just really lucked out in the genes department.  Man.  How old is she?

Speaking of older ladies.  Barbra Streisand looked amazing last night singing Memories for the dearly departed ....especially Marvin Hamlish.  It was very big of her to get up there...she is a nervous Nelly and you know this is not her favorite thing to do.  But she did it beautifully.  Sue loved Barbra so much and it made me cry.

And the winners are.....

Source: fabsugar.com via Donna on Pinterest

This woman is born to wear gorgeous clothes. (Charlize Theron)
Wow.  She looked amazing.
There were crystals on the peplum.  It was divine.

And then! She came out and danced with....who was her partner??  ummmm....
She had on a chiffon dress when she dance and that was so pretty too.

haha.  I just looked it up.  It was Chantam Tatum.
I kinda wish she had danced with John Travolta.  Cause even tho he is weird and has issues,
I think he is nice and nobody in this generation dances like Johh Travolta.

Why am I not in charge of everything???

Source: fabsugar.com via Donna on Pinterest

And there she is....lovely and down to earth, everybody loves....

Jennifer Garner

I LOVED this Gucci dress because the back was fabulous and the color was really right on.
She was gorgeous and she stood out.  She even looked comfortable.

And THEN her darling husband won BEST MOVIE with ARGO.....
and he said the weirdest, most awkward thing to her...about working on the marriage...and it came out all wrong and embarrassing.

Oh my.  Ben was so flustered and babbling....but...his biggest moment was not so great in the wife department.

So that's the quick run down.  I've gotta run....a few things to do today instead of sitting here reading comments all day.  Darn.

Please feel free to share what you loved about the clothes and show....
and what you did not love so much.

I have plenty of opinions...I spent the night on Facebook blabbing away....
you should have been there.  ha

Now it's your turn!

What do you think?

  1. Running out, more later - but my favorite dress I've seen so far was on Robin Roberts. She looked amazing! It was a terrific oscars night from the clips I've watched - so much music!!!! And I loved the dress Samantha wore during the les mis song on stage - so flattering and beautiful. This plunge was a little much. She's teenier than I thought she was!

As for Babs... She has one style dress and Donna Karan makes it for her in new material every time. It was a sweet tribute - Hamlisch was a total genius. I thought last night was the very first time I've ever heard Babs sing when she sounded... older. Like her voice isn't what it once was. She's the best of her generation. Forever. A voice for the ages. It was somewhat heart warming to me to know that she's not made of steel and has begun to age, too. :) I've loved her my whole life.

    3. Steph, I thought Robin Roberts looked wonderful also, very classy. I think Jennifer Garner's plum gown was my favorite (but maybe I just think that because I like her, think she has her priorities straight, love that she appears casual and easy about the whole thing).

Agree with everything you said about Babs.

Loved Adelle's outfits and song (so much better than the dress she wore at the Grammys with the huge red flowers).

Charlize and Jennifer G. were my favorite, too.
Ben and Jen are such dorks and they will prolly laugh together about his comments about her. I saw him in an interview once and his phone rang and he said he had to get it, it's the wife, he's was like, um, honey, I'm in an interview..

Here's why I love Jennifer L. 1) she's Katniss 2) even though the costume for Katniss was very fitted, she intentionally didn't lose tons of weight because she knew lots of young girls were looking up to Katniss and she wanted her to be normal weight, not Hollywood weight

how do you not know who Channing Tatum is? funny, and he couldn't dance so Travolta is a good call, you should run these things

I bet Halle's dresses was stunning in person

  5. Hello, just back from seeing Les Mis finally and I'm still processing. I think I may have to see it again. Whew! amazing is an understatement. I'm feeling a bit wrung out, in a good way.

Redemption is a wonderful thing. The voices and acting blew me away. Sorry, I know I am late for the LM party ...

New subject: I love your choices in dresses. I think my favorite was Jennifer Garner, but I'm partial to her due to my deep abiding love for Alias. She can kick you-know-what in all areas, yes?

    Jennifer Anniston looked lovely too.

The coral in Kerry Washington's gown (and a bit deeper on Sally Fields) makes me so happy. One of my favs. I don't understand the popularity of the washed out colors.

You are so right about Stacey No-Cookies vs. Halle Berry. I didn't like HB's at all but thought Stacey looked very nice.

BTW, I saw a cute photo on people.com of the little gal from Quvenzhané Wallis meeting Halle Berry and it was very sweet.

Thanks for this post! I now need to find Barbra on youtube. Love.

I love Anne's dress except the darts. LOL The back is stunning!!!!

I think Kerry W's dress looks a bit Prom-ish to me. imho

Jennifer G's dress....I do love it, the fabric, the color, THE JEWELRY but the back just throws me a little...like dinosaur or tail...

  8. Jennifer Garner won for me, hands down. She is absolutely gorgeous! And I LOVE Jennifer Lawrence and was so happy she won! While I agree that she beat out some AMAZING actresses, I can't agree that it was a "dopey, easy role". Playing someone with mental illness can't be easy. Bi-polar disorder is horrific in that sometimes you seem perfectly "normal", but then other times....look out. I thought she brought a lot of reality to the role. She reminded me a LOT of my best friend from college...

Anywho! Adele is phenomenal all the way around...beautiful and extremely gorgeous! And I loved Kerry Washington's dress as well. And Babs? Gotta love her.

However, I did NOT love Seth McFarlane. Dude's kind of a schmuck, if you ask me.

I love Anne and Charlize's short hair. I have fine, thin hair and can't wear it long so when I see a celebrity with short hair it makes me so happy!!!
I am drawn to color. That washed out pale color that some of the ladies chose either worked really well or it looked horrible.

  10. I really liked Salma Hayek's dress also. The velvet was beautiful and the fit of the dress showed off her beautiful shape without the usual cleavage on display (although the gold seemed overly heavy to me, but maybe it needed that much to balance out the velvet).

  12. Ok, I took notes while watching the show in anticipation of what Miz Boo was going to post today. :)

Ann's dress was a pretty color, but those darts~not good.

    Octavia was beautiful.

Jennifer Garner's dress was a pretty color, but that bustle in the back was ridiculous. How did she sit down?

I did not think Jennifer Lawrence's dress was a good idea and when she fell on the steps, I said outloud, "That's why that dress was a bad idea." I felt so bad for her.

Some of the dresses looked like they just did not fit well. I have a problem with the dresses that go straight across the chest but look like they might slip and then you will see nipples!!!! Egads! I actually get nervous watching them stand there hoping they don't have a wardrobe malfunction!

My favorites of the night were Nicole Kidman, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Robin Roberts and Amanda Seyfried.

Who ever dressed Melissa McCarthy needs to be fired. And what was up with Renee Zellweger? (I think I just spelled her name wrong.) That was really odd.

I loved Jennifer Lawrence's dress, too. She did handle her trip-and-fall with grace, but why don't they have ushers assist the women up the stairs? I also loved Jennifer Garner's, but would have liked it even more if the bustle was a bit smaller. She's a doll, though, and she and Ben are my favorite Hollywood couple. They're my American version of William and Kate. :) Amy Adam's gorgeous dress reminded me of one Emma Watson once wore. It may have been the London premiere of the final HP movie? I'll have to google it when I get home from work. Agree with all that Adele was fabulous. Highpoint of the night for me was the Les Mis cast. Sniff, sniff.

  14. My favorite dresses of the evening: Nicole Kidman, Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence... really, almost all the women looked marvelous. I loved the color that Jennifer Anniston and Jane Fonda added to the mix.

My favorite moments: In Memorium, Barbra Streisand singing, Les Mis crew together singing and Daniel Day-Lewis acceptance speech. His Lincoln portrayal =brilliant. His wife, Rebecca Miller is gorgeous. Loved her hair, her dress, her expressions!

My favorites doing whatever they do: Sally Field and Jennifer Garner. Ben Affleck can't go wrong married to JG. She's a gem. Loved him in Argo, but I would have voted for Lincoln for best picture. What do I know?

I liked the Melissa McCarthy skit. I thought she was great (I know you disagree, but it worked for me).

My favorite dresses/looks were Octavia Spencer's and Reece Witherspoon's. Perfection. I agree that Sally Fields is doing something right. She looks fabulous for her age, nothing phony about her and none of the plastic-surgery-gone-bad. I absolutely loved hearing Barbara sing. My husband and I went to see The Way We Were on one of our first dates back in the day. Brings back wonderful memories and Barbara's voice will always be one of my favorites. Adele is running her some competition, though. She is kind of a present day Barbara in my book. As far as Jennifer Lawrence, I thought she was spot on in her performance in SLP. Kudos to her for getting the Oscar. As a mother who has a bipolar son, the nuances of her performance were outstanding and I was so impressed with both her and Bradley Cooper. I'm so glad Daniel Day Lewis won Best Actor. Amazing doesn't even sum him up. What a brilliant gentleman.

  20. Emma and I watched them together (I'm sure she told you). We had very different opinions from you but pretty similar to each other... funny how that works ;) Peer pressure, I guess! Anyway, we both hated Anne Hathway's dress that she came in but loved the one she wore for the musical special. And, I sort of liked Halle Barry's dress because it fit her and the style she was going for (Bond girl). I went to bed before Jennifer's tragic fall, but Emma poked her head out of the bathroom while brushing her teeth this morning to tell me about it. We talk about important things in our house!
I was curious though... why do you think Melissa chose the dress that she did? Surely she knew it would look that bad. I agree that we don't need to make fun of her, but I'm so mystified that she chose to wear it! Skinny girls can get away with whatever because it's assumed they aren't trying to cover up, they're just being fashionable. Big girls have to dress carefully. Octavia's little shoulder shrug thing looked lovely, but she wore it because her arms are flabby and she knows she looks more flattering when she is covered. It's also common sense that if you are heavy and misshapen, you have to force a shape with the silloutte of your attire. I have a thing for chubby girls, can you tell?

    1. I've been lurking and reading all the interesting comments and just LOL'd at "nipplegate"...good thing no one is here to hear me. (And it's so true.) Love the back of the dress, but the front...terrible.

  27. Sally Field looks amazing but I'm just wondering about her hair color in that photo. It looks like she is letting her own color grow out (if so, yay for her!) with the few inches of ends still colored brown. It just seems so....odd. I know there is a mini-trend back toward natural color (I've seen books on the subject) so I'm wondering if that's the deal there.

Saw a little clip on the news this morning that even Stephen Colbert was poking fun at AH's dress due to the darts! :)

Also, I did remember to google and found out that the dress Emma Watson wore to the London premiere of the final Harry Potter movie is almost identical to the one worn by Amy Adams the other night. I am so impressed with myself that I even remembered that, but it must be because that dress is so very lovely and feminine. Beautiful on both of them.

  29. Late to the Opinion Party. I loved Robin R. in that blue. Wasn't 100% crazy about the bodice, but the color and the fabric and her glowing smile all made me love it.

I not only love Jennifer Garner's dress (although I do think "dinosaur" when I see the back...my middle name is Hamilton if you need to put me in my place, Donna (-:) but I love her natural smile and posture. Some of those pictures are so weirdly posed (Natalie Portman? Amy Adams? WEIRD) and Jennifer just looks happy and beautiful. And Reese's smile in that second picture has the same relaxed beauty to it.

Charlize poses and looks like a Greek goddess. Wow, she is beautiful. And I love her hair.

It must be quite unnerving to be on the red carpet. If you relax and start laughing, some camera is going to snap a pic of you with your mouth wide open, looking like a weirdo, and post it for all to see and laugh. So I would be nervous, too.

I would love to see the pale dresses in person. I bet those blush colors, and even the grey/blue pastel of Amy Adams' dress, were gorgeous in person. I thought they looked very washed out in pictures, though.

If Jennifer Aniston's dress had had about ten yards less fabric in the skirt, it might have won for me. Great color on her, and the cut looked so nice on her. I always want to do something with her hair, though. Her hair isn't like Kristen Stewart or Helen B-C's problem hair, but I would wish for something a bit more zingy to go with that beautiful red dress.

And speaking of hair, I really, REALLY love Adele's hair in that second picture. I think it is much more flattering. What am I missing in the style she hit the carpet with?

Octavia Spencer? Lovely. That color looks like an orange cream soda...great shrug. Perfect hair. Really lovely.

Anne Hathaway is so great with that short hair, and this was such a special night for her...what was that dart seamstress thinking?

Thanks for this annual fun opinion fest, Donna. Loved hearing everyone's likes and dislikes.

  31. One comment on the Ben/Jen issue...and I love them. They are such a cute couple. I heard someone (maybe from People Mag) on Ellen or GMA (can't remember, but that's an "age issue ;) last week or the week before "elude" the the possibility of marriage problems...which made me sit up a little more when I heard his speech comments. But, I hope it's like most marriages that have their "issues" and we work through them. Or just nerves on accepting the award.

But I did love her dress and Octavia...man did she wear that dress well. It was just beautiful on her. Other than that, I pretty much agree with all that has been said. :)

I guess I'm the only one here who thought Jessica Chastain looked wonderful. The dress, the fit, make-up and hair were all perfect. Also, Reese and Charlize were so lovely. Hated Halle "s dress and how dingy Amy Adam's dress photographed. Would it kill Jennifer Aniston to do something with her hair?

All the opinions and thoughts are so subjective. That is what's so fun about all these shows. Sitting in our jammies and telling them where they went wrong ! My vote for actress was Jessica or Ms Riva. Much more difficult and comlex roles done so well.
