recently...

recent movies

blue jasmine...i read somewhere that this is like streetcar named desire....that is true.  it is.  it is sad and without redemption.  cate blanchet is remarkable.  san francisco is beautiful.  the rest...is blah.

captain phillips...so much better than i imagined.  suspenseful.  it's worth seeing to watch the amazing tom hanks at the very end.

dallas buyers club...interesting story, amazing acting.  very. very crude and vulgar.  you've been warned.

about time...sweet story that could have done without the time travel.  characters are pleasant.  not bad.  not worth writing home about.

the spectacular now...high school kids.  struggling.  falling in love.  secret drinking.  every mother's nightmare.  i don't recommend it.  this kind of movie disturbs me....like perks of being a wall flower.  it turns my stomach to imagine life is like this for teens.

Look at the teeny tiny cute little lip balm.  It's a minature version of the regualr vasoline jar.  I think it's too cute.

Bringing Up Bebe by Pamela Druckerman continues to be among the favorite books I've read in the last few years.  This little book puts those ideas in very short snippets.  I would still recommend the original book first...but this is a nice little read.

Happy Thursday!

I hear many of you are getting lots of snow today!  Drive safely!
And those of you in the sunshine states....don't forget your sunscreen!

Lots of love,
Donna

  1. I am not crazy about time travel movies... I don't understand that concept. I do want to see Dallas Buyers Club. Based on a true story, I find it an amazing period in our history regarding fighting aids. I'm not sure how I feel about Blue Jasmine. I have never loved his movies, so I will probably just see it on tv.
    Sleeting here.. blech.

  2. Hi there, I do love the teeny tiny vaseline, and what a bargain. But what can I say? I'm hooked on EOS. Thanks to you, Miz Boo :-)

weather here? Very rainy and very windy. We even had some thunder earlier. It's been in the low 40's, which is very weird for February. Yesterday was dazzling sunshine. (side note: my windows are dirty).

No snow yet in Zurich, but if I got on a train and went about an 40 minutes I'd be high enough to find some in the mountains. So far, I've resisted the urge :-)

  3. Have seen Blue Jasmine and Dallas Buyers Club....I agree about Blue Jasmine...wasn't that impressed though the acting was good. Dallas Buyers Club....MM is amazing as was Jared Leto. I just saw an article yesterday where Leto said he will never lose weight like he did for that movie for another role again....too hard on his body. MM lost 47 pounds in 4 or 5 months I think? I liked the movie. It was vulgar but definitely worth seeing. We watched it at home on Amazon Prime. I really want to see Nebraska. Has anyone seen it? What did you think?

  4. As much as I adore Friday night lights - which is SO MUCH - I shudder in fear that high schoolers actually live like that, so I know what you mean.......

The only thing we see in theaters is frozen and next week -- the Lego movie! I can't wait!!!

Nebraska is next on my list and I’m also anxious to see Winter’s Tale (starring Lady Sybil in her life after Downton). I'm with you about the high school movie. Too sad and too scary.

The recipe looks yummy. Time to go eat lunch!

  6. John and I went to see Monuments Men as an early Valentine's date. We LOVED it. Such a great story, and what a cast!

    Cate Blanchet is amazing.

    2. A bad head cold has kept us from seeing Monuments Men but I'm glad that it is being held over. We hope to see it next week. I've read two books (MM and Masterpieces of Berlin) and watched two movies (Rape of Europa and The Train) about this subject. I expect to LOVE it, too!

  7. Did you get any snow? We got 12 inches so far. They are saying that more is coming. OH MY! I am pretty worried about my homeless friend, Alexander. I couldn't find him in any of his usual spots yesterday. I had planned on bringing him home with me as I knew this storm was going to be crazy. Will you say a little prayer for him? Thank you. With love, Becky

Becky, We have been praying for all those without homes especially in places where this is turning out to be a very cold and snowy winter. We will add Alexander to our prayer list.

Dear God who knows each person here on earth, please be with those who are in any trouble, sorrow, need, sickness or any other adversity. Amen
      love and prayers, jep

    2. What I love about the Lord is how he sees (and loves) all, both small and great. And he sees Alexander. Praying along with you and jeps. Lord hear our prayers.

  9. Thanks for the movie reviews. I usually agree with your choices, so it's good to have a heads up. And thanks for the recipe! I love my new slow cooker. My other one died from too much use. ;)

It is 39 degrees in southern Iowa. The sun is shining and I have my windows open in the house to let fresh air blow in. It's quite lovely. I hid my daughter's Nintendo DS and she is playing with her toys and dolls. Is this heaven? No, its a magical day in Iowa. he he
Kris and I rented Dallas Buyers Club the other night. We really didn't know what it was all about. I agree with you Donna, it is crude and vulgar. It disturbed me, but overall I thought it was a very, very good movie. It makes you think and open your mind and views. I like that.
I want to watch Captain Phillips. I've heard a lot of good reviews on that movie.
Oh, thanks for the crockpot recipe and the book rec.

    God bless,
    Sarah P. from Iowa
