The most exciting day. FAIL.

DSC_4856-33

My most favorite thing in the whole wide world is the Blue Angels.  My love affair with those loud, blue jets started when I was a young girl.  Our dad would take us to see them at the DuPage County air show.

The tradition has continued with my own children and family.

Last year the Blue Angels and the Thunderbirds did not fly due to government stuff.

This year they are flying.

The Milwaukee Air and Water Show was on Saturday and Sunday.

We headed over to Milwaukee on Saturday morning, Emma was meeting us, coming up on a bus from Chicago.

It was cloudy.  Low clouds.
We hoped they would clear.

But when we got to the waterfront....it was freezing and socked in with fog....as they say.

And to keep the story short.

The fog never left.

We waited until 2:45 for the fog to leave.

It did not.

Stoopid fog.

First day of summer

Sums it up.  Perfectly.

I took perhaps my favorite picture I've taken in a while.
It's good to get out of the house and see different things.

  1. I JUST sat down with a fresh cup of coffee, and bopped over to see if you were here. PERFECT timing.

I love these foggy images. The one of Patrick with the girls playing in the background truly tells the whole story.

Sorry you missed 'em. But you snagged some cool pics. The silver lining (I could not resist!)

  2. Wow, someone else remembers the DuPage County Air Show! I used to fly out of DuPage with my dad when I was a kid in the 70's. We would get to the airport early, wash the plane, then drive out on the field and watch the airshow. Loved the Blue Angels, Thunderbirds and Art Scholl. I think the Thunderbirds will be at Oshkosh this year, first time a jet team will do a full performance.

  3. When I think of the Blue Angels I think of sunburn. Too many Moffett Field Air Shows and not enough sun screen.

Drat on the fog. But your pictures are incredible. Poor Patrick. But darling girls in the background...nice form, Katie!

Those blues and reds really pop against the mist, Donna. And your pic of the lifeguard and boat is quintessential vintage. I can smell Coppertone just looking at it (-:

    Happy Monday,
    Di

It looks like you all had fun anyway.....well....lol. I like the picture of Patrick and the girls. : P
Gorgeous pictures of the lifeguard and the boat. They would make a pretty canvas.

Oh, Donna. Those pictures of the lifeguard and boat. Spectacular. They evoke a mood....inviting, and yet lonely. I can just hear a boat's foghorn off in the distance. I am sorry you missed the air show, but those pictures are such a treasure.

We are an AF family except for my FIL who was a Naval officer in WWII, so we love the Blue Angels and the Thunderbirds. My hubby actually flew one of the plane types that were used in the Thunderbirds, the T-38. He was an instructor during our AF days. The F-16 is the plane most often used as Thunderbirds. Sorry you did not get to see the show, but I agree with all here what lovely photographs as always from the amazing DEGB eye. Nice to see Katie feeling better.
    love and prayers, jep

  11. I can so relate to this post. While my son was in Boot Camp, we went to Chicago for his graduation. One of the things we were going to do was see the Blue Angels fly. We were all SO EXCITED!. But, alas, foggy weather did not allow it to happen., We were soooooooooo disappointed, so I know exactly where you are coming from. Hoping you get to see them soon :)

    2. Yes!!! And the crazy thing is, I haven't been to an actual Blue Angels air show since we moved here in 91. But watch them practice all the time. We spent a week at the beach when they were training a new pilot, they flew everyday. It was fun to watch. Josh Sitton is here today too!

I echo what everyone else said -- sorry no Blue Angels, but LOVE the pictures you took! Patrick and the girls, the lifeguard with the boat, the girls together are all so good. Thanks for sharing!

    Donna,
I just wanted to let you know that on June 17th, we happened to be on a family vacation near Pensacola (we're from Kenosha) and got to see the Blue Angels perform at the base there. It was so hot and humid, and people were dropping from the heat. My daughter got ill too, before the show started, and as we were walking back to the car, we found a spot of shade and were still able to enjoy the show. It was truly awesome. I'm sure they will be back our way sometime, but if you ever get a chance to check out the base in Pensacola, espescially while the Blue Angels are there, it's worth the trip.

    Love your blog
    Terri

  16. I hate it for you. The Blue Angels actually flew in our small town years ago. We were able to sit in our front yard and watch them practice the day before the show! There was a glitch on show day, too, as the sound system wasn't working, but they went ahead with it. They quit with the air show after that year since the horse owners said it was scaring their horses too much. (This is horse country so they won. Bah.) That photo is amazing every way you edited it. You need to print it and hang it on your wall!
