get well soon

With the fourth child...there can still be firsts.

Katie is home for the third day from school due to a mild stomach flu.
Every time she eats she gets very queasy.
I think she could power thru it....
and I think she would go if I made her go...
But then what about the other kids.

Ah.  The otherness principle.

And so.

She stays home.

I have requested her homework from the school.
Missing three days is a lot, don't you think?
Her book for English class is on the ipad.
To Kill a Mockingbird.

I still think it is easier and better for your brain to read from a paper book.
I have read reports to this effect.

The experts agree with me.
Bam.

Who? Littleboo. #messeduphair

Get well Katie Gracie.

Love and...keep your distance.

Mom

  2. Bless you, dear Katie! Get well soon!

And YES, paper books are the best (my humble opinion, but also backed up by facts.)

I read on my kindle sometimes (easier while living over here) but I get distracted. I prefer a "real" book.

  3. Hope Katie is feeling better very soon ~ UGH! Hate being sick ... sometimes you just get SICK of BEING sick!! I bought into the I-reader trend ... bought one, got one as a retirement present, downloaded tons of free books ... BUT ... still reserve PAPER books at the library, pick them up and read them MORE than anything on the internet or I-readers I have. I just love the FEEL of the paper in my hands as I turn each page ..... yes, I am old .... LOL

I totally agree 45th Parallel Quilter....I love the feel of a book in my hands, the smell of the paper pages, and the smell of libraries as far as that goes. I'm one of those people who feels excited to walk into a library- all the possibilities. My son downloaded a bunch of books for me onto his old e-reader and gave it to me and it is taking me forever to get through one book because I am just not drawn to it. Plus there is the irritating fact that it has to be charged.

We have had the respiratory virus in our family since early Dec. and my DIL and I are the two that just can't seem to shake it. We are still coughing, coughing, coughing...no fun. Being sick is no fun at all. Being heathy is highly underrated in my book. And, speaking of books, it is the real deal for me, too. Somehow reading on a screen just is not the same...there is no smell, no feeling of paper, no sound of the pages turning...I too am a hold out and love my library reserve books so much. I pick them out and they put them on the shelf for me to go and pick up and read. I miss browsing, but not much time for that anymore. Be well Katie...maybe try kefir or some other probiotic and get that tummy back healthy. God bless and be with you each one. love and prayers, jep

Hope Katie feels well soon!! To Kill a Mockingbird is such a great novel. Hopefully she can lose herself in the story and not focus on feeling lousy.

Wishing warmth and good health to all,
    Mary Z

  7. Poor Katie. I'll keep praying she's better soon. You are such a thoughtful mama, Donna. I appreciate that so much. So many of the illnesses we encounter are at church where parents bring their sick kids. Oh, he only had a slight fever last night. Oh, she hasn't thrown up since this morning! It makes me want to hibernate in the winter.

    1. P.S. Totally agree with the whole book vs reader thing. To Kill a Mockingbird is one of my all time favorite reads. My paperback is torn and worn.

What a bummer for Katie. Prayers for her quick healing. And as a retired school librarian, I will tell you that the school blesses you for keeping her home until you are sure she is well. I had an interesting experience with To Kill a Mockingbird. I read it in late grade school. In spite of the times I grew up in, I had little experience with racial prejudice and its various manifestations. When I read the book, the only thing I could relate to was the adventures the three children had and their experiences with the neighbor Boo Radley. Then when I was in high school the film came out and my mother took me to it. I was shocked at how this book about three kids was changed into a movie about a lawyer and an African American man who was wrongly accused of a crime. I then reread the book and was even more surprised at how much I had missed! When I became an educator it reinforced the theory that new learning should be related to prior knowledge and experience. The entire incident still makes me laugh. Dee S.

  13. Get Well Soon! On the reading from screens - I was a big paper or nothing type until I tried the kindle readers - they are back lit so you can lie in bed and not disturb your partner and you just touch the right hand side of the screen to go forward a page, on the left hand side to go back a page - simple. So I've read more than ion the last 10 years these last six months. Just a suggestion - it's got a really good feel on your fingers too..
