Annual John Updike December

DSC_2111-3

“December,” by John Updike

First snow! The flakes,
So few, so light,
Remake the world
In solid white

All bundled up,
We feel as if
We were fat penguins,
Warm and stiff.

The toy-packed shops
Half split their sides,
And Mother brings home
Things she hides.

Old carols peal.
The dusk is dense.
There is a mood
Of sweet suspense.

The shepherds wait,
The kings, the tree -
All wait for something
Yet to be,

Some miracle.
And then it’s here,
Wrapped up in hope -
Another year!

Donna

  6. I love this so much. When I first found your blog, it was when you would post an Updike poem at the beginning of every month and I loved it so. It made me want to read more poetry. This one on December is just too perfect. Thank you for sharing it!

Those Updike poems are so dear to me...they remind me of you.
Your winter photographs are like paintings...make me think of Narnia.
No snow here, but lots of wind. Like Richard Wright wrote:
    "A wild winter wind
    Is tearing itself to shreds
    On barbed-wire fences."
    love and prayers, jep

  14. I love both photos, too, but especially that second one. The smallest details of a snow covered tree as so beautiful, if we only stop and see!

It is pouring this morning, and I am so happy. We are supposed to have rain all week. I am so thankful.

    Love,
    Di
