Saints

I read about Saints all the time.  Not the real, recognized, offical Saints.
But humble, ordinary people doing extraordinary things for others...day by day...

This morning I read the little school newsletter that comes home with Katie.  It included
these two quotes;

"The wonderful thing about saints is that they were human.  They lost their tempers, scolded God, were egotistical or testy or impatient in their turns, made mistakes, and regretted them.  Still they went on doggedly blundering toward heaven.
~Phyllis McGinley

"Why were the saints saints?
Because they were cheerful when it was difficult to be cheerful,
patient when it was difficult to be patient, and because they pushed on when they wanted to stand still, and kept silent when they wanted to talk,
and were agreeable when they wanted to be disagreeable.
Because they challenged themselves and others to be more like Jesus.
That was all.
It was quite simple
 and
always will be."

    3. Your church is stunning, Steph. And there is something about this angle, and the sky, that is perfect. Those crosses against the bright clouds. Thanks, Donna.

  2. How I love that photo! :) And you! I posted an All Saints hymn on FB today - A simple one written for children that has a real undergirding of deep truth -- and a sense of , 'Doggone it, no matter what, I'm going to be one too!' which seems to me very parallel to the idea of 'doggedly blundering.' :) Love you, Saints of God!

  3. Yes and yes and yes!!

My favorite line in "For All the Saints" is this: we feebly struggle, they in glory shine.

Now when I sing it, I will think: we doggedly blunder, they in glory shine.

  4. My dear mom would look at her calendar when we called to set a date and she'd say,
"The party is on November 11th? St. James the Lesser , Okay I'll mark it down"
She prays to the Saints and the BLessed Mother all the time.
I love the LITANY of Saints song. I'll send you a link Donna

  13. I don't practice the Catholic religion anymore, but I still have strong feelings for the things I learned as a child. I will never get over how, when I come to your site, I am left so surprised. It seems we all have a connection of thoughts, and timing. Last week, and no one knew this but me, I signed up to receive an email from the Franciscan's. They show whose saint day it is on any given day. It has been interesting to read about them. I was surprised all they did in their worldly life and still were cannonized. I thought you had to be pure as the driven snow to be a recognized saint via the church. Yes, Donna they do walk among us, even today, and they will receive their crowns in Heaven. And, being the saints they are, they will lay them right back at the feet of Christ.

Very beautiful indeed, Cece. Thank you. I am a Baptist and my pastor preaches constantly that our goal should be to try to be like Jesus as much as we possibly can- kind, gentle, loving, forgiving. And you are right, any crowns received will be laid right at the feet of Jesus, because anything good we can possibly do comes from him. Thank you, too, Donna. Count me in as one of the doggedly blundering.
