The funny papers.

Back in the day, everyone got the newspaper delivered to their home.  I thought.
My dad was especially fond of the sports pages and my mom loved the comics.  I remember her loving Broom Hilda.  Apparently Aunt Betty was a huge fan too.  I can remember hearing mom and Aunt Betty talking on the phone and laughing so hard at Broom Hilda.

The reason I am telling you this is because my cousin John is on Facebook.  Johnny posts the most hilarious and often times naughty comics.  And I sit in my little house in Wisconsin and laugh along with Johnny (in Illinois)  at the things he posts.

When these funny 'comics' show up in my fb stream I always know it's Johnny.
It reminds me of my mom and Johnny's mom.

The laughter continues.

Encourage one another,
Donna

  1. My grandma always LOVED Family Circus. She had seven kids herself and she would cut her favorites out of the paper and tape them to the insides of her kitchen cabinets. As a kid, I would spend time traveling around her kitchen, opening all the cabinets, while she and mom talked over coffee at the table. Thanks for the trip down memory land, Miz Boo!!

Donna, My morning isn't complete without reading the comics. My current favorites: Zits (because I have a teenage boy, and it is my life) and Pearls Before Swine (super clever). Laughter is good.....although I must admit I have never heard of Broom Hilda. Must go google....

  3. I love these - laughter is good like a medicine :-)

The guy who says "you might be a redneck if ..." (Jeff Foxworthy?) has some funny lines. One of our favorites: how rednecks use the word sensuous: "Sensuous up, can you bring me a beer?" :-P

  7. My grandpa and mother mailed comics back and forth to each other. My grandpa's favorite was Herman. I can still hear both of their marvelous laughs when I read those.

My favorite you listed? Of course, it's the rum/run one. Perfect for me (-:

    It's Friday! Yahoo!

  8. p.s. did others grow up calling them "the funnies"? Grandpa called the comics the "funny papers", but I guess we shortened it.

We love the comics at our house and save them for last to read in the newspaper which we still have delivered to our house every morning...we are so old school. Like Beth's Grandma, my mother loved Family Circus. Her favorite one was of the mom pulling the last load of laundry out of the dryer and having the little boy come running in all dirty from head to toe. Like Amy J. we enjoy Zits, because Jeremy is just like our youngest son was as a teen. We tell each other that the writer of Zits bugged our house. And, Pearls Before Swine is another favorite, too. I am old enough to remember Broom Hilda and Herman...good ones. Thank God for the comics! After reading the news, we need some laughter. I enjoy it when all the comic writers pay tribute to one of their own, like when Charles Schultz died and they all had his nickname "Sparky" in their comic arc the next day. Thanks for the smiles Donna and QLCS. love and prayers, jep

My husband, kids and I all loved Far Side. We also miss Calvin and Hobbes! Our eldest son was a Calvin type and even had an invisible friend named Peetie. :-) jep
