Downton Abbey Season Four Week Three (episode Four)

I very much liked the story lines for Mrs. Hughes.  How she dealt with the Edna and Thomas affair was fantastic!  I loved how the old Duchess told Tom her sweet story of grief and dropping things.  I found it very moving.  Mrs. Hughes is becoming my favorite.  I am not usually a fan of the downstairs stories.  This is changing.
That I care so much for Tom is a testament to some awfully good writing and acting.
I loved when Isobel said that she loved Mary.
And then when Mary said her head was still full of Matthew.
(As it should be so soon.)
I don't hate Rose as much as I use to...I'm glad she is not so much of a brat.
Oh my!  How the family freaked out when she danced with the 'black man."  (I wonder if the word would have been negro?)  The singer has kind eyes but I hate the make up on him and really didn't care for his voice.
I really do not care a bit for the whole Ivy, Daisy, Alfred thing.  snoozefest.
Again we see a quick shot of the babies...off in their prams.
Gosh...no wonder they do not have relationships with their parents.
So below you will see a few quotes I found especially fine.

Mrs. Patmore: Sometimes you can spend too long on a one sided love.

Mrs. Hughes: We were mad as hatters to let her (Edna) back in the house

Lord Grantham: There is no such thing as a marriage between two intelligent people that does not sometimes have to negotiate thin ice.

I hope you have watched the show and can share your wonderful opinions...and remind me of what I have already forgotten.  (I am in the process of watching it for a second time this morning.)

Have you ever spent too long on a one sided love?
I have.

Encourage one another,  Donna

  1. Love Downton Abbey, the writers are simply wonderful and the actors/actresses really bring it all alive! I think we have all spent time in a one sided love affair. Though I don't think of it as a waste, it made me stronger in the next relationship. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

  2. Referring to Isobel, "She is a good woman, and while the phrase is enough to set one’s teeth on edge, there are moments when her virtue demands admiration."
I laughed out loud at that!!!
I do love Mrs. Hughes! I hope Anna finally tells Mr Bates what happened, because that's going to be a dreadful thing to watch.
Mary's head full of Matthew... oh, I am so pleased they allowed her to do that!!
And Mr. Carson... my other favorite, "The business of life is the acquisition of memories; in the end that’s all there is."

    1. Oh! That a good one to remember...the aquisition of memories....
      I think it's a bit more...but it tells of Carson's thoughts...
      so good

    2. Cheryl you are good to bring up Carson's quote about memories. I LOVE it.

Also the conversation between Lord G and the Dowager about what a good woman Isobel is. Another gold nugget!

I loved last night's episode! Mrs. Hughes really did shine in so many ways (dealing with Edna, comforting Anna and in gifting Carson with the photo). A quote that stood out to me (although I may not remember it exactly) was from Mary: "Don't be so transparent, Mama. It doesn't suit you." I also liked when Mary encouraged Tom to find someone he trusted to confide in. A nice sisterly gesture and aren't we so glad he took it to heart?

Too long on a one sided love? Yes, and unfortunately I didn't have Mrs. Patmore there to counsel me to move on

    1. Oh yes!!! The wise advise from Mary to Tom!! So good!

    2. I loved the way Mary handled that situation, too. And Mrs. Hughes is a favorite of mine.

    3. His turn of the phrase "You would despise me" was good for Mary to hear - since those were here same words. I love how Tom stormed off to find Mrs. Hughes as soon as they came to a halt in the driveway. A great scene between Tom & Mary. They make a good team, in a brotherly/sisterly way.

    4. Yup. "You would despise me." Excellent writing for Mary and Tom.

    5. I love Mrs. Hughes for SO many reasons. But I really love the dagger looks she was giving Gillingham's valet when they left. If looks could kill ...

  4. I have, too! I don't care for the Ivy/Daisy/Alfred story line either. The Anna and Mr. Bates story line feels like it's going to be tortuously long.

My favorite quote? The Dowager Countess to Lord Grantham, "Why are you in your rompers?"

  5. I loved the whole scene at the Lotus Club because it got them out of familiar surroundings and I liked the music (although I agree, I don't like Jack Ross's voice). Rose is indeed less bothersome this season.

You've already shared many of my favorite scenes. I LOVE the way Mrs. Hughes takes care of Edna. YES!

Also, I am glad that Mrs. Hughes articulated what we were all thinking: we must tell the police!

The last scene with Tom & Mary riding off in the car, and the two nannies with the carriage really sums up their whole way of life doesn't it?

What did you think of Edith horsing around with Gregson? I admit I was very disappointed in her.

I know that Ivy/Daisy/Alfred/James is sort of a snooze fest (good term Donna) but I will say this, I have a soft spot for Alfred the same way I did for William.

FINALLY, I love the conversation between Isobel and Violet when Violet said she didn't judge her or Mary. Or words to that affect. Violet can be sweet when she wants to be. :-)

Now I want to watch it all over again!!

    1. Edith's hair looked nice in that scene. I think it is realistic to think she would sleep with Gregson. Never advised...but I understand it for her. She wants so madly to be desired.....

Yes. Violet is sweet in spite of herself. :o)

    2. Her outfits this year have been stunning!! Hair do's too. You are so right, she just wants to be appreciated and loved doesn't she?

    3. Is anyone else wondering what legal paper he had her sign? I'm very curious about that. I hope she isn't getting swindled somehow, but that was my first thought when she signed the paper without really reading it.

You're right, she really does just want to be loved. One of these seasons I hope I don't have to utter "Oh, poor Edith" anymore.

  6. Me again - the scene with Lord Gillingham and Mary when she said Matthew filled her brain - she wasn't ready to be without him yet - I thought Mary did a beautiful job with it. He, too. And man, they really locked lips!

    1. haha. yes. I'm glad they locked lips :o) He fell in LOVE quickly didn't he? Mary's action was beautiful in that scene. The more I see the actress at awards shows...the more I admire her acting. Because she is indeed acting. Not like that dopey Jennifer Lawerence getting all the big awards...when she is just playing herself. BOO.

    2. I also meant to add ... I like that Tony said to Mary he didn't really like his valet. That made me like him even more :-)

Yes, I have spent too long on a one sided love. Finally, I came to my senses and karate chopped that relationship out of my life. Did some major praying and along came my husband. Thank you Jesus! : )

  8. Loved Downton last night ... my huge fear is that Anna is pregnant and the horror of not knowing who the father is will fuel the divide between Mr. Bates and Anna. Pray it is not to be!! Just KNEW that Edna was going to be up to no good with Tom ... to try and "blackmail" him into giving his promise to marry her ... what a trollop! I think Mrs. Crawley is wonderful in expanding herself to become more involved in charity work with the good Doctor ... I don't think that story is over with either. Mrs. Hughes is just the BEST ... love her to pieces. Disappointed that Edith didn't wait but her aunt certainly gave her an earful! Yes, have stayed too long in one-sided relationships (that's plural!) but I think in the end it made my appreciate even more the gift that God put in my path (my husband) ... he's more than I ever dared dream to find and our love just gets better each day/week/month/year. Good post, Donna! Linda

  9. Where to BEGIN?!?!?!

I loved this episode. It had all the good ups and downs of great storytelling - and one of the storylines that would have driven me insane had it carried on [Braithwaite!!!] came to a perfect end. Phew. Although, I'm disappointed in Tom, drunk or not. Yet I confess a terrible double standard, because I wasn't as disappointed in Edith, because it's what I exactly expected of her. [Maybe I expect more of Tom? Hmm..] I LOVED Aunt Rosamund's chastisement, though. VERY appropriate to the times, and to her devotion to her family's reputation. .

Favorite Line: 'If we only had moral thoughts, what would the poor churchmen find to do?' :)

Weakest line: 'you fill my brain'. {what??!?! how about 'you fill my thoughts' or 'you are ever on my mind' or 'I can't escape the thought of you'. but.. YOU FILL MY BRAIN??} It was somewhat dearer when Mary said 'Matthew still fills mine'. That worked for me.

Teariest moment for me: Lord Gill's proposal and Mary's refusal. I found it to be the most transparent we've seen her since Matthew's death. I really, really liked his character. Or the moment when Isobel greeted him with a warm handshake and invitation. Gave me the weeps.

Best Costumes: ALL THE PURPLE. The last two weeks, Violet has been in these stunning purple velvet dresses.. and did you see Mary in the long dark purple velvet? Just gorgeous. How far out family-wise does the mourning garb go? Grandmama-in-law? is she still wearing the 'coming out of mourning' color, too?

Gonna be a long one: Anna. Oh Anna. I know it's a different time and place, but please tell the truth. And please get some help. You are destroying your marriage on the altar of that man's vile act. Two losses.

Worst singing: That jazz singer. Overheard in the seefeldt house: "Could they NOT find a handsome black actor who could sing? this is PAINFUL!" Rose has grown on me a bit, too. But why did Rosemund let her go out again when she had to be rescued last time she was there?

I'm sure I'll think of more... But don't you think we're seeing a softer, more lovely Violet this season? I suppose a lifetime of love and loss in hindsight can have the effect of softening one's heart....

    1. The weeps when Isobel shook Lord Gill's hand - YES!!! oh yes.

also YES to the pretty shades of purple and lavender. I'm pretty sure Violet has always worn that shade, maybe she's sentimental about her name?

Rosamund was great in that scene. I also loved the way she and Tom danced around - pretty snappy!

I agree with Stephanie, I LOVED the dark purple dress on Mary. So fabulous. I am hoping she will reconsider Lord Gillingham's proposal in a few months and all will be well. He seems like a decent chap. And Mrs. Hughes was so wonderful! Loved the way she got rid of Edna. Yea! And she was so kind to give the framed photo to Carson, even though I think she has a crush on him herself. As far as one-sided love, yes, I have experienced it. But when I consider it, I so often think of William Shakespeare. "Love is not love which alters when it alteration finds."

  11. This was an interesting episode to watch. Sadly, after Anna's rape and Edna seducing Tom, a lot seems trivial now and that's a problem, I think, for Downton. The show excels when it's focusing on the daily things of life, not when it's focused on big events like WWI. I agree with so many of you that Ivy/Daisy/James/Alfred are a bore. Love Anna, Mrs. Hughes, & Carson. Another mistake by Edith...poor Edith.

The producers originally announced Mary would be moving on rather quickly, but have admitted they had to change plans when they realized fans hadn't had time to adjust to Matthew's death. I think, but am speculating this part, they had originally planned for Mary to be swept off her feet by Gillingham. With some scripts written before they decided to slow things down, they left Gilly being a bit pushy in his attentions, but rewrote Mary's lines to say she wasn't ready. In other words, I think the episodes we've seen so far were written then tweaked after they decided to slow down Mary's moving on from Matthew. The rest of the season was written after they changed their direction. (Season 3 also had several scripts written before Dan Stevens told them he was leaving. They didn't do much rewriting of those scripts because production teams were too far into preparation. You could see the plots start changing middle of S3 to adjust to his departure.)

Love the show and will keep watching, but miss the fun of Season 1. --Missy

  13. "The business of life is the acquisition of memories. In the end that's all there is." -Carson
I love this sentiment, as a mother who also loves photos snd scrapbooking, though I don't agree with it in a literal sense, but it is a lovely thing for Carson to say.
I'm afraid Raithwaite will be the bad penny, turning up again with more schemes, though I was glad that plot wouldn't drag on too long.
And while it would not have seemed right for Mary to have accepted the proposal of Gillingham, I kind of wanted her to give a tentative yes! With a waiting period...but he was a keeper.
Is it just me, or does anyone imagine Mary and Tom finding themselves a comfortable couple down the road? I so like him as well. Not her type, but still...a good man.

  14. I can't see how lord Gillingham fell head over heels for Mary. She's so reserved, hard to get a half smile out of, sure she is pretty, but other than being attracted to her money and position, it's a tad implausible given her demeanor. I'm glad to read comments this morning to hear the clever sayings. I think I need closed caption to catch some of the dialogue. Drunk or not, Tom made a terrible choice and was fortunate to have been bailed out. Gosh I sound cynical this am! I do feel terrible for Anna but wish Mrs. Hughes would tell Carson, that is too serious a crime to sit on in silence and everyone can see it is slowly killing Anna. Not a smart move for her to take on double duty in her fragile state.

  15. It's Wednesday and I'm back again. Just love a reason mid-week to re-think the show! Watched most of it today while I purged my 14-year-old's dresser drawers. :)

  16. Love the show ,too. Mrs.hughes wisdom Is remarkable. What a kindness to frame Mr.Carsons old flames' picture. Glad Tom got his problem worked out. I hope he and Mary will eventually get together. I was glad Edith's aunt called her on her poor choice. She makes dumb decisions. Wonder if she will turn up pregnant

I just sat down to watch the past two episodes. Wow. I love how the Dowager and Mrs. Crawley are getting closer to their relationship before Matthew's death, but only after the Dowager had such nice things to say about her. (Just after she shook Lord Gillingham's hand and said she hoped to be seeing more of him in the future.) I love those two older lady characters!
