Our friend Southern Gal asked for help in finding music for a mother/son wedding dance.
I have been thinking about this and I think I would pick a song by my son's favorite group.
So for Matthew it would have to be something by Cold Play or Mumford and sons.
Matthew and Melinda did not do special dances at their wedding so I've never really thought about it.
I was thinking yesterday of the WORST wedding songs as I was looking thru lists of the best wedding songs.
So for Matthew I thought Fix You by Cold play would be hilarious....
and one of my favorite songs...
Until you come back to me by Aretha Franklin.
Wouldn't those be perfectly inappropriate!?!?
I'll do anything to play this song!
LOVE IT!
If you have an idea for Southern Gal please leave it in the comments!
XOXO
Donna
Ha! That's hilarious, Donna! Jacob loves alternative rock so I have no clue what songs would fit. Thank you for asking for ideas!
ReplyDeleteHave you seen this by Tim Hawkins? We saw him in concert last year since he's Ethan's favorite. http://youtu.be/I8S2u8_vSnc
And y'all can call me Renee. ;)
When my oldest daughter was married, the mother and son dance was a song that happened to be titled with his first name. We have laughed that the Bruno Mars "Dancing with Another Man" would be weirdly inappropriate for a daddy daughter dance.
ReplyDeleteMy youngest son is getting married this Saturday at our house. The bride has "My Wish for You" by Rascal Flats picked out for the mother son dance, but I'm going to beg her to change it because I really don't like Rascal Flats. If she really wants it, I won't make a big deal though. :) I think "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong would be perfect because it's a great song and Josh used to walk around singing it when he was little. He went through a Louis Armstrong phase when he was about 8, and played the CD we bought him nonstop. He could sing this song sounding almost exactly like Louis Armstrong. It was the cutest thing to hear that voice coming out of a little white boy!
ReplyDeleteWhen his older brother got married two years ago, I chose "Teach Your Children" by Crosby, Stills, and Nash. It may have seemed an odd choice, but it was perfect for Caleb.
Donna, I think "Yellow" would be a good Coldplay song!
When my daughter graduated from high school she loved "My Wish". It was played over and over again for graduation ceremonies and dances. The version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow we like has What a Wonderful World in it, too. Two for one. ;)
DeleteHow about My Girl? Or My Wish by Rascal Flats? You'll Be In My Heart by Phil Collins?
ReplyDeleteYou'll Be in My Heart was a suggestion that kind of got shrugged off. I'm going to ask again just to see. Thanks!
DeleteDear Renee, I know these are oldies, but I saw them listed for the mother/son dance and thought they would be good: Wind Beneath My Wings by Bette Midler and The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face by Roberta Flack. Doesn't every mother remember that first look at their child?
ReplyDeleteI know you will find the right song for you and your son. love and prayers, jep
Thanks Jep. good ones.
DeleteRenee, some beautiful Christian songs that seem to me like they could possibly be appropriate and moving for a mother/son dance are Mark Harris singing Find Your Wings or Mark Schultz singing Remember Me. Just an idea.
ReplyDeleteDebbie Z.
I'm not familiar with Find Your Wings. I'll go listen.
DeleteDonna, my son Tom is getting married on 10/4, and I have been searching for a song too. I wanted My Wish for years and years, but, I almost feel like it has been overplayed. And although it is what I told the DJ to play, I am thinking of changing it. But not sure to what. Music was big in my house. We were always singing and dancing. :) I thought Rod Stewart's Have I told you lately that I love you...was a good one. Tom and I sang that alot together. But, no, NOW I find out he sings it to his future bride :( Forever Young is a hard song to dance to, but has been part of all three of my kids weddings now...and Ain't no mountain high enough is another one I have sang to them. Julie is Willie Nelson's You were Always on my Mind. Karyn's is Stand by Me. And Tom's favorite song was "Bad Bad Bad Boys" the Gloria Estefan song. SO not appropriate. I told Jim his father/daughter dance with Julie could be Toby Keith's Whose Your Daddy :) He wanted nothing that he thought would make him cry. Instead he did "You're Gonna Miss This"
ReplyDeleteKris Irving Schwarz
PS, I can't remember what Derek's mom and him danced to...Dan and his mom danced to I Hope You Dance. Which is a good one too
ReplyDeleteKris
Kris,
DeleteI love the Randy Travis song I'm gonna love you forever. Not sure if it fits... I'll go listen.
Congratulations
My parents will probably dance to this one since they've been married 52 years and love this song.
DeleteI've given this topic a lot of thought and hope that, when Jamey does get engaged and is planning the wedding, that I'm able to keep my ideas to myself until asked. :)
ReplyDeleteI love Forever Young (Rod Stewart), Sweet Baby James (James Taylor), Baby Mine (Dumbo) and My Wish (Rascal Flatts). That's my current list and I love to see that some of these songs were suggested above. Good luck, Renee! You'll have to let us know what you ultimately decide!
Mary Z
Yes, please do tell us what you and your son decide is your song! jep
DeleteI love all the suggestions. I hope I'll be able to find just the right one for my "last dance" with Jacob. Thanks Mary and Jep.
DeleteMary, isn't there something from les miz to dance to?
ReplyDeleteOooh. That sounds interesting. Can't think of one right off the top of my head, though.
DeleteThanks all! Donna this was a good way to get some great ideas. I'm going to be listening to a good many between now and then. Four and a half weeks! Did I mention it's also our 34th wedding anniversary? ;)

Awesome list. Wow I hope some day I'm not told the song I'm dancing with my sons...I hope I might be consulted? But definitely will wait and see. Please tell me I let my husband and motherinlaw pick their song? Or at least that I had a mother/son dance (uh oh, not sure I did?)
DeleteI have known since my son was five years old ( he's 18 now) that we will play you'll be in my heart by Phil Collins. We used to dance to it all the time when he was little and it brings back beautiful memories.
ReplyDeleteOffbeat Bride has a list called "Non-sappy Father/Daughter dances" so there might be something there that strikes your fancy even though it is a mother/son dance. Like Beach Boys' "God Only Knows" or Any version of "You Are My Sunshine," particularly the Johnny Cash version. http://offbeatbride.com/2007/06/non-sappy-fatherdaughter-dance-songs
