Death Comes to Pemberley

Death Comes to Pemberley

Have you read the book?
Have you watched the mini series?

I have just watched this on Masterpiece theater.  It grew on me and I can recommend it to you all.

A well known mystery writer PD James wrote the novel Death Comes to Pemberley.
I didn't read it.  I couldn't imagine I would liked it.  At all.
But then I stumbled upon the mini series and I started watching.

Eventually I got used to this Lizzy and this Darcy and this Wickham and this Lydia.
They looked different...but they acted the same as the characters I am so familiar with.

It's a great mystery movie....set in the loveliest of places with people I have grown to adore.

I really liked it.

Perhaps someone brighter than I would find fault with someone toying with Jane's story....
And I am usually quite snobby about my Darcy and Lizzy...must be Firth and Ehle...no one else...
ever.  never.

But gosh.  I loved this.

****

I am frightfully afraid of what is being done to Into the Woods.  It is being made into a movie and from the clips I have seen...it sounds off and weird to me.
I will be there.
I will watch it on Christmas day.

I hope I am as surprised with Into the Woods as I was with Death Comes to Pemberley.

  1. I tried watching the first episode, but I couldn't see Matthew Rhys as anyone but Kevin from Brothers and Sisters.
Maybe I'll have to give it another try.

  2. Claire is excited because Jenna Louise Coleman is Lydia. As a Dr. Who fan, she is looking forward to seeing her in this role. I enjoy Anna Maxwell Martin, so we will both be happy.

P.D. James is one of my all-time favorites! Look forward to seeing this. Thanks, Donna.

    Love,.

    1. Jenna is wonderful as Lydia. She is very beautiful.
Also I have a crush on Matthew Goode who plays Wickham. He was in Leap Year and kissed Amy Whatshername very nicely.
This is the first time I have seen Jenna and Anna. Anna is plainer than I would like...but she is a good actress.

Jenna is beautiful. I love her in Doctor Who...she has great expressions and is a sweet character.

I watched and enjoyed it. I like fan fiction so I can continue in my fav character's lives. I loved Jenna as Lydia (Dr Who fan). I also loved the settings. Ah, Pemberly.

I've been thrilled with the clips of Into the Woods I've seen and I'm so excited! Have you seen the long clip? 3-4 minutes? I adore the actor playing the Baker. I hope Meryl sings better in this than she did in Mama Mia. I will be at the midnight showing (one midnight gone). I cna't wait!! (But then, I handle change better than some of my sisters ;) )

    1. They sure had a lot of servants didn't they!? More than Downton Abbey.

I have the broadway play so deeply ingrained in my brain...it's hard to hear different voices and different timing.
Oh! You are so funny, Janice.
      Me no likey change much.

  4. I LOVED the book. I haven't had time to watch, but I will for sure. can't wait!
As for Into the Woods, beware, because I love it almost as much as I love Les Mis. And you remember that I had OPINIONS about that, too. :) I've been quite pleased with the trailers so far - and the singing has made me happier than I expected. So that's something. I'm never bothered by Meryl's singing because it's so gosh darned consistent and sincere - it just sounds exactly like I'd expect Meryl Streep to sound, you know? Anyway. I won't be there on Christmas Day because Christmas movies aren't our thing, but certainly shortly thereafter. Can't wait!

    1. I now understand better how difficult it was for you to 'accept' and love Les Miz. I remember your beautiful write up after you saw it. Memorable, Steph.
It's the new dialog and rhythm of the songs that has me worried.

    2. We'll see - I just hope someone comes along to make a beautiful move adaptation of Secret Garden with that incredible score. And Wicked! And Chess! :) :)

I was thrilled to hear Death Comes to Pemberley was coming to the small screen as I need some characters I love to keep me occupied before Downton and Outlander return in 2015! I’ve recorded the first two episodes and am looking forward to watching them.

I’ve only seen one clip of Into the Woods and am very excited for the movie. Greg was musical director when our church youth group put the musical on in the mid-‘90s. We had some great singers, but not a whole lot of depth, so we got used to hearing the songs sung differently than the Broadway version. And if the end is right, it justifies the beans. :)

  10. I read a review of this about an hour before the first episode aired and quickly grabbed the remote from the football crew in order to tape the mini series. I really enjoyed watching it, especially since Sunday is so devoted to pro foottball in this male dominated household.

The funny story is that I was watching it while my husband was talking on the phone with his hard of hearing mother. Instead of ramping up the volume on the TV, in order to follow the British accented dialog, I closed the hallway door. I didn't want to interfere with his hearing his mother, nor miss dialog. Then, there was a very loud clatter in the hall doorway. After finishing the conversation, he picked up his work backpack, came down the hallway LOOKING AT THE FLOOR. He never saw the closed door. He is from Chicago and has what I call the Chicagoland stroll, which means he slammed into the closed door. Thankfully he is okay (but embarrassed) and I could pause the show to find out what was going on.

It took me a little to get used to Rhys (?) as Mr. Darcy, he reminded me more of a Bingley, but I quickly accepted him. Lizzie and Darcy are perhaps my favorite couple ever.
