Let them eat cake

On Monday Janet and Susan were obsessing about a particular cake.  (We won't talk about the cake as it is Wednesday and I want to keep the comments free of Downton Abbey Spoilers on every day other than Monday.  Monday we talk Downton.  The rest of the days, I want to let everyone read all the comments :o) )

But I still want you ladies to see the gorgeous cakes I have pinned over the last two years on Pinterest.

This is from the first week of pinning.

And this one I pinned just last week!

I like flowers...and natural looking cakes, don't I?

I thought you would like to see those! I had many of them pinned on my "Beautiful" board.

On Saturday I tried a cake
at a grocery store opening in Madison.   The baker was Carl's from Sun Prairie.  Katie and I tried a piece of the vanilla with raspberry with vanilla butter cream and it was out of this world delicious.  We will be heading to Carl's next time we need a cake!  Yum.

It was not pretty.  It was just delicious.  And that's okay too.

Here are a few pictures I have taken this week.

It's so dark lately when Katie is home and well...Ginny only has one expression.  ha.
But I did notice that it was a touch lighter at 5:00 last night and that gives me hope!

But until the sun stays around longer in the evenings I will be lighting my family room with twinkly lights.

Let your light so shine!

Encourage one another,

Donna

    Hi Miss Donna,
I love your blog and wanted to let you know that posts are truncated and images are no longer showing up in google reader. This seemed to happen around the same time that you had issues with the comments. Just wanted to let you know!
    Peace,
    Rachel

I was going to say the same thing a week ago but didn't want to seem picky. It's actually been good since I'm making a conscious effort of clicking out of my reader and leaving comments. :)

  2. Hi Donna, just sat down here -- about to have that afternoon cup of coffee that I love. Sure would be great to have a slice of cake to go with it! These are beautiful. Do you read "Posie gets Cozy" ? That's Alicia, who pinned the lovely acqua blue (turquoise?) cake with the edible stars. There are only a few blogs that I read devotedly -- and you and Alicia are certainly some of those.

Rachel is right, on Google Reader there is just a header for your blog, no images -- but that's ok with me, I always click over to your blog page, to see the images in all their glory :-)

Yes, no Downton mentions mid-week, that is only fair to all the folks. But I will say, cautiously, that I re-watched Episode 4 and 5 today, on my DVD's - here in Zurich. I'm not giving anything away when I say it just gets better and better.

    Back to my coffee -

    1. Hi! I adore Alicia and her style. All of it. In fact the final cake is hers in this blog post. However I pinned the blue cake in 2011....before she was pinning much or at all. She has been pinning a lot lately and I LOVE it.

ugh. I don't even know what google reader is. boo.

    2. Google Reader is handy to be notified of new blog posts, it's a great way to see them all together. Some blogs are more informational, and then there are blogs that have great content AND great photos (like you! And Alicia of course). Those are the ones that I click over to see as they truly are.

By the way, I have probably mentioned it before, but here in Zurich they don't really do much frosting on cakes. VERY hard to find. And I'm like Di, I do love cake but adore frosting.

    3. Cake = conduit. Nothing more.

    4. And that is why Carl's was sooooo delicious....the softest most perfect vanilla buttercream I have ever tasted from a store bought cake.

    5. I can tell that I would LOVE Carl's. Back in St. Charles (Illinois) there is a small grocery store called Blue Goose and they make the BEST cakes. AND sell them by the slice. Even coconut, with lemon filling. It is Dee-Lish.

BTW, my Christmas lights (star shaped) are STILL up in my living room window, and I love them in the morning and afternoon when it is still dark. I plan to take them down around Valentines day :-)

  3. Donna,
I know your blog is not all things DA, but I watched the
latest episode last night and I just loved Mary's blue
dress at Edith's wedding. The clothes this season are
swoon-worthy. Would you consider a DA fashion
parade (like the GGs) so we can discuss and
    swoon together?..Pretty please? Hmbalison

  4. I love beautiful cakes, but I don't like eating cake...just frosting. I always tell my kids they should frost a box beautifully, and that would be perfect for me.

When does DA come out on DVD here? I know I won't see it until it does...and I am getting eager. I want to start back at the beginning with John. I think he will like it.

    Love,
    DI

  5. I love the blue cake. Yummy! It has been dark out, but that isn't the excuse for my not taking pics. I need to keep my camera out and it stare at me longingly. I love the pic of Katie in B&W. Lovely!

  6. As a bit of a novice cake decorator I love your pins. I always say there are two categories of cakes, the cakes that are art and the cakes that make you want to dive into them. You have representations of both in this post. When it comes time for my own birthday I always request "old fashioned" cakes... to me nothing is more mouth-watering or pretty than an old fashioned coconut cake with flake coconut lightly pressed into the icing, homemade chocolate icing just swirled on my Mom's fantastic eggless chocolate cake, a carrot layer cake with cream-cheese icing, or the angel food cakes my mom always makes with powdered sugar glaze dribbling down the sides decorated with either mandarin oranges or strawberries. YUM

My favorite cake to eat is chocolate mayonnaise cake, slightly warm, no frosting, in a bowl with 2% milk poured over it. Unbelievable. :P

  8. Lovely cakes. Our bakery of choice is Chocolate Nirvana. Out of this world delicious. We used them for Rebekah's wedding and for her daughter's birthday parties. Lemon Blackberry, Almond Joy and Raspberry Keylime with white chocolate. Yum. I don't think I'll ever buy a cake anywhere else.

  9. Yay. A post about beautiful cakes. My love. That first cake is TO DIE FOR. I just pinned an amazing cake two days ago on my "beautiful" board. You should go look at it. The second cake you posted is lovely and it doesn't look to hard to create. I am a bit of a cake snob. It must be tasty and it helps if it has a touch of almond extract in it. :) Butter cream frosting, of course. Fondant is cool but I don't like trying to eat it or around it.

I think your cake pictures are lovely. I have made beautiful cakes and just plain yum cakes. My family always goes for the plain yum and so do I.For me decorating is way over rated. Except when I want to show off at showers and such. I make more breads. Cranberry, banana, date nut. Big hits in my house. If I had to pick a cake favorite, it would be coconut or yellow with milk chocolate frosting. The latter being my birthday cake that Mum baked for me my whole life. I didn't fall for coconut until later in life. My mother's cake menu was basic and absolute. Chocolate, white, yellow, angel food with various frostings. All from scratch, though. I am recording Downtown. I enjoy being able to watch the whole thing at one time. It requires much patience and the ability to look away from recaps and can be very frustrating. Worth it in the end.I have whole seasons of Boardwalk Empire and Once Upon a Time waiting for me to find the time. We recorded the whole last season of Lost and I cried so much watching it, I looked like I had been in a fight. My husband wasn't quite that bad.

  12. I got Kaishon's Birthday cake from our local Grocery store, Giant. He had 2 because one was on his actual birthday with Gary and I and the other was for the party with my family. The second one was chocolate with whipped cream icing. Real cream. OH MY WORD. I thought I would die. It was so good.

I have been taking pictures lately. But only because I have to for my job at the hospital. I haven't been taking pictures of my kaish or the the house or life around us. I just feel so sad lately.

This Sunday my very good friend Tiffany is getting married and I am shooting her wedding along with Adrion. I think that will be fun. She is wearing 2 dresses. The first dress is out of this world AMAZING! I will send you a picture when the wedding is over. The second dress is fab too. Tiffany is doing a special dance at her wedding with her bridesmaids because she is a dancer. Isn't that fun? I hope everything goes just as she has it planned. She is very excited.

I am glad to see you and your cake post today. I was crying earlier, but this made me smile : )

I love to look at cakes and like Di I love to eat the icing, but the actual cake does nothing for me. I always wanted cookies, not cake or candy. Now that I can't have cake or cookies, I enjoy dark chocolate for a treat. Your cakes make me smile! So glad they made Becky smile, too. We all need a smile and this is the place to come get one. A trick with boxed angel food cake is to add to the mix 1/2 teaspoon each real vanilla and almond extract. It makes the cake taste like homemade. I have a friend who makes Butter Glaze for her angel food cakes: Mix 1 Cup sugar, 3 Tablespoons cornstarch and add 1 Cup hot water. Cook until thickened. Remove from heat and add 1 stick of butter & 1 teaspoon real vanilla. Yummy! love and prayers, jep

These cakes are all gorgeous, but the turquoise one is my favorite! Frosting is my friend. I always go for a corner piece of cake for that very reason.
