The Hat heard round the world.

A few months ago Pharrell wore this hat to the Grammys.

Every one laughed.
His hat went viral.  Which means Twitter Blew UP!
Which means everyone who saw Pharrell's hat was talking and laughing and exclaiming about his goofy Dudley Do Right Mounty-esque hat.

Now.  Pharrell has been in the music business since the early nineties. He produced big hits with Snoop Dog, Kanye West. Jay Z and Destiny's Child.  People in the industry knew Pharrell.  The general public did not.

I had never heard of him until last summer when his name came up a few times.  He of Blurred Lines and Lucky. Both of these songs were nominated for Grammy's.  Both of these songs were my summer favorites along with Safe and Sound.
Also last summer Despicible Me 2 featured Pharrell's joyous song Happy.
The song Happy was nominated for an academy award earlier this winter.
We saw the movie...I was not overly impressed with the song Happy.  Nor was the public...and it was not played and didn't catch on...until after Pharrell wore the HAT.

Happy was not being played on the radio.  It did not play all summer.  It did not play in the fall.  In fact, it has just become wildly popular since Pharrell sang it at the Oscars.  Wearing another hat.

I do not think his song would have been nominated for an Oscar if he had not worn that HAT to the Grammys!

I read that Pharrell has had this hat for years.  He wore the Vivian Westwood design to an event in London four years ago.   Nobody I know noticed.

Everyone is noticing now.

A new kind of 'cat' in a hat.

******

The only other hat I can think of that changed a person's life was possibly this one...

Harrison Ford donned this great hat in Indiana Jones and the Lost Ark and there was not looking back.

Other notable hat wearers.....

Isn't life something?

Encourage one another,
Donna

  3. My kids have loved that song since the movie came out. In fact, they downloaded it onto my phone the day after the movie. I remember not being all that impressed with it. But they were! Guess my kids are serious music people! Ha! :-)

    2. The thing that sold that song for me was the dancing! The dancing on the Youtube video is so much fun that I think of THAT when I hear the song! :-)

Loved the hats today. I will also add that the hat worn by Princess Beatrice at Will and Kate's wedding is worth noting :).

  5. I am sadly behind the times, so I am very glad to have you, Donna, to help me with my pop culture. I had no idea about the hat. But I knew about the tune - but only recently.

Since I don't need a car, (don't have one) I miss out on listening to the radio. I do tune my radio to classical music in the kitchen, though. Less people talking loudly in German - helps me and my cooking vibe. It's peaceful! But I am admittedly out of touch :-/

Before I moved from Zurich, I was in my friend's car -we were on our way to book club - and this "Happy" came on. She cranked it up and I did some of my best chair-dancing (well, actually car dancing) it is such a fun memory for me :-) It was the first I had heard it - probably in January!

Love the hat collection too !

  8. Oh, if only the song had just caught on recently. Unfortunately (or not) if you have young kids you've had Happy beaten into your brains by Kids Place Live (an awesome kids channel on sirius/xm) for a year - even before the movie came out! I heard it was also at the top of the charts for songs people workout to. That hat is his "thing".

He did Very Bad Day for the original Despicable Me as well. Both songs perfectly match the feeling of the movie and are completely different.

He's an amazingly talented gent. And I love him even more so for wanting to get plastic out of the ocean:

  9. My unrequited high school crush used to wear a fedora to school when fedoras were not at all "cool". How I loved that fedora! And when he graduated, he gave it to me. I am married now, but if I could place that fedora in a glass museum box and set it in my living room, I would. LOL!
Every time I see a fedora, I think of him.

That's funny, I thought Happy was instantly popular since DM2. My kids have been singing it since the movie came out. I guess that's perception for ya. I thought everyone loved Happy. It seems like I was always hearing it. I was shocked it didn't win the Oscar. I thought it was so popular and everyone loved it. I guess we are trend setters, or fashion forward, or something like that in my house. HA!

  11. I think it's your demographic. Small children. It really was not played on the radio here, but that is a different demographic. Imagine all the adults when had not seen Frozen. Children have driven that show and its songs through the roof. The power of little people.

  12. Here is a link to a video made by 4 local high school girls - all friends of my daughter's. The twins are the younger sisters of my son's best friend. They made the video for a radio contest about what makes them happy about Winnipeg. It is so fun to watch…. The ice cream store and the little white cement bridge in the video are at the end of my street. Thought you would like to seeing their enthusiasm….. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tne0VoLJEFU&app=desktop

My husband wore an Indian Jones type fedora hat the whole time he taught at different universities. He would wear a felt one in the cooler months and a straw one in summer. This last university, the students would see the hat as he walked to and from home across campus and head toward him to visit. I think a man wearing a hat is stylish! love and prayers, jep
