falling

Our fall is late this year.
We are so ready for it!

October’s Party
by George Cooper

October gave a party;
The leaves by hundreds came.
The Chestnuts, Oaks and Maples,
And leaves of every name.

The Sunshine spread a carpet,
And everything was grand,
Miss Weather led the dancing,
Professor Wind the band.

The Chestnuts came in yellow,
The Oaks in crimson dressed;
The lovely Misses maple
In scarlet looked their best.

All balanced to their partners,
And gaily fluttered by;
The sight was like a rainbow
New fallen from the sky.

Then in the rustic hollow
At hide-and-seek they played;
The party closed at sundown
And everybody stayed.

Professor Wind played louder;
They flew along the ground;
And then the party ended
In jolly "hands around."

Encourage one another,
Donna

  1. I love this poem. I suppose three is a little young to try and introduce my grandsons to poetry. Although Mother Goose is a hit around here. Baby steps.

      I want to teach my grandchildren to love poetry too! It was my grandma who read A. A. Milne poetry to me, and James Whitcomb Riley, and recited The Highwayman out loud. She started my life-long love affair with rhyming lines (and free verse). Thank you, Donna, for today's beauty about fall.

  2. This is lovely. The October Party is happening in Anchorage, except we don't have as many varieties of trees - happily sunshine has been present, in a big way.

    Also, Katie in blue is beautiful!

  8. It is late for us this year too. I have been thinking of you all week because my pretend cousin Jimmy and his wife and family are at World Dairy Expo. My Dad and Mom went one year and my Dad had such a great time. I also thought of you yesterday when I was shooting a wedding in an old barn. It was so gorgeous and I kept thinking you would have loved it. I wish I lived next door to you. I have been praying for you at your job. I know you make a difference. Sending lots of love.
