Wedding thoughts and a beautiful announcement

In the mail....

In the mail... By Carrie @1canoe2 It's beautiful and perfect!

When Cindy was a teacher in Columbia Mo. she met the nicest young art teacher named Carrie Shryock.  They became good friends.  Cindy cheered as Carrie and Beth started 1canoe2...she was one of their biggest fans!  Carrie and Beth have become big illustration, letterpress, stationary stars....but Carrie still kindly makes the best announcements for Cindy from time to time.  This one was especially special!!

To see more of the darling work from Beth and Carrie check this out.

Cindy was looking for poems or verses for her wedding.   I thought of some that I liked...but I knew right away that they probably wouldn't be her thing.  She knows I love to pick out quotes and that is why she asked...but honestly, I was picking from my personal place...

”We need a witness to our lives.  There's a billion people on the planet, what does any one life really mean? But in a marriage, you're promising to care about everything.  The good things, the bad things, the terrible things, the mundane things, all of it, all of the time, every day.  You're saying 'Your life will not go unnoticed because I will notice it.  Your life will not go unwitnessed because I will be your witness'."

[i carry your heart with me(i carry it in]

BY E. E. CUMMINGS
i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear;and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
                                                      i fear
no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)

(It was hearing it read in this movie that made me really like this poem.)

...for as long as we both shall live....

See...it's all so personal....

Joe: It wasn't... personal.
Kathleen: What is that supposed to mean? I am so sick of that. All that means is that it wasn't personal to you. But it was personal to me. It's *personal* to a lot of people. And what's so wrong with being personal, anyway?
Joe: Uh, nothing.

Kathleen: Whatever else anything is, it ought to begin by being personal.

And so....Cindy and Pat chose their own perfect verses and quotes....

Sonnet 116

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O no! it is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come:
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.
--William Shakespeare

This beautiful sonnet came to mind..but I didn't send it.  I have heard it read in Sense and Sensibility many times and had no idea what they were saying.  It wasn't until I heard Sarah Jessica Parker recite it in Did you heard about the Morgans that I understood it and thought it to be so lovely.

I know. Lame.

And it's so obscure it is not even on youtube.  Ah well.  I will cherish it alone in my pretty little head.

What is the nicest thing you have ever heard in a wedding?
Yours? Anothers?

Encourage one another,
Donna

  1. lovely thoughts & quotes here, Miz Boushay. So glad to find you still here. I'm a long ago reader, who found you way back when I was homeschooling w/ Well Trained Mind and hung out on those boards. I wandered away from your blog a few years ago, but stumbled back on it and I'm so glad I did! I feel like I knew you and your girls back then; my how they've grown into such beautiful young women. Good to see you again!

  2. You had me by the heart strings with "You've got Mail" !

Our wedding was so long ago (hehe) that nobody thought to have quotes or sayings. But of course scriptures and prayers were said. I think back then I just didn't have that many preferences yet - I was 19 and a HALF ! yikes.

The quotes, poems, sayings that you include here are so lovely. I love them for different reasons.

The poem about "I carry you in my heart" was read at my niece's wedding in 2012 and it was perfect.

    And the announcement? PERFECT!

  3. Hi Jana! Thank you for leaving a comment. It's very nice to have you back :o) I'm still here plugging along! Are you still homeschooling?

  4. yes, but I'm nearing the end. My youngest graduates in June. I'm not sure how I'm going to make that transition, after 15 years of homeschooling!

  5. This will sound funny, but at our dear friend's wedding (they're both from ranching backgrounds) the bride's sister (who was the matron of honor) in her speech said, "You know you truly love someone when you can work cattle with them for a day, and love them at the end of it." And it's true.

I guess if ranching isn't your lifestyle, maybe it doesn't make sense - but the work is so immediate, and decisive that sometimes tempers can flare if a cow is missed thru a gate, extra work is created etc. BUT - at the end of the day, if a couple can leave all of that outside and love each other in a marriage that realizes that those emotions are caused by a drive to excel, then it's meant to be. At least in my book.

Anywhooo....that's the best thing I've heard at a wedding, probably because it rang so truly in my own life. It was personal. :)

  6. You know, Donna, I read that sonnet at my mom's memorial service. I know it is about sweethearts, but I see my mom's kind of love all over those beautiful words. Thanks for posting it.

And Joe and Kathleen? Sigh. It is time to watch You've Got Mail again.

Do you recommend In Her Shoes?

    Happy Friday!
    Love,
    Di

  9. i carry you in my heart.... truly my favorite. But at the time of our wedding, I had just read the book Gift from the Sea by Ann Morrow Lindburgh
“When you love someone you do not love them, all the time, in the exact same way, from moment to moment. It is an impossibility. It is a lie to pretend to. And yet this is exactly what most of us demand. We have so little faith in the ebb and flow of life, of love, of relationships.”
― Anne Morrow Lindbergh, Gift from the Sea
I must go back and read this book again. I am at a point in my life where I will learn even more.

Cheryl, I love Gift From the Sea. I chose this passage from it to be read at my parents 50th Wedding Anniversary celebration. "Here the bonds of marriage are formed. For marriage, which is always spoken of as a bond, becomes actually, in this stage, many bonds, many strands, of different texture and strength, making up a web that is taut and firm. The web is fashioned of love.....the web of marriage is made by nearness in the day to day living side by side, looking outward and working outward in the same direction. It is woven in space and time of the substance of life itself." So very beautiful and eloquently said.

Beautiful announcement!! I would have loved a Christmas time wedding. And I would definitely pick different readings and songs now vs. 30 years younger me. :)

At a wedding we attended a while back, the bride and groom left the church while "A Whole New World" from Aladdin played. That was a sweet touch. At the weddings of my youngest siblings, a bagpiper played the recessional song. I love bagpipes.

Kathleen Kelly and Joe Fox, beautiful reading, poem and sonnet -- what a treat today!! Thank you.

  11. I've done a lot of weddings, as you can imagine. And as much as I think I've heard it all, I haven't. A wedding in November, a bride and groom both devastatingly wounded in previous marriages, and the groom said this:

I'm here today not because I was looking to get married. I'm here today because I met you.

  12. The font in the wedding invitation is wonderful. I keep seeing it and would like to use it for my photography business watermark. Do you think Cindy knows the name of it? or how to hunt it down? I will go to the 1canoe2 website and see if I can find it.

  13. Rachel, that is not a font. That is Carrie's handwriting.

  14. Beautiful design for the wedding announcement ~ and I just wanted to add that I loved the movie In Her Shoes. I, too, was struck by the use of poetry in the film and blogged about it highlighted *One Art* by Elizabeth Bishop.

Here's a link to the marriage blessing that our minister prays at the end of the weddings he performs ~

Just getting here today. We were with the grands yesterday playing. I have so enjoyed reading the comments and think your announcement is beautiful, Cindy. Marriage must be really important to me, because I have a lot of quote about it. We wrote our own marriage vows years ago, but I cannot find them…must have stored them somewhere really safe. ;) I remember saying something about standing together facing the world and a quote from The Prophet about “let there be spaces in your togetherness, And let the winds of the heavens dance between you.” Recently I read this: “…loving a man who loves you is not ceding control of anything. It’s giving, and taking, and sharing. Love, marriage—neither is a contest of wills, and there aren’t any winners, any losers. When you look at a man, let him see you for all that is good in you, all that may not be quite so wonderful, let him really see you, the real you, let him know you, and he does the same with you…in love, surrender is the real victory.” Kathryn Seidick Yesterday on our drive we listened to Kelly Clarkson’s Christmas album (just came into the library) entitled Wrapped in Red. She wrote a song for her new husband, Winter Dreams (Brandon’s Song) and in it she sings, “This Christmas Eve, ‘I’ became ‘We.’ That is marriage, when “I becomes We.”
    love and prayers, jep

    1. jep, I just peeked in here in case there were more comments, and here you are.

These are all wonderful - real gems.

I love the mention of being known for all you are, the good - the not quite so wonderful - this is so true. I love that my husband knows everything about me and loves me just the same. And has for 35 1/2 years. What a blessing. And me, him.

love and prayers back to you

Kathryn Seidick is the author of the quote and then the next sentence starts…sorry for the inept composition. jep

I keep coming back to read the poems you talk about Donna and then I remembered something I just read….Marriage is a sacrament….Bishop N.T.Wright said: "A sacrament is a place where heaven and earth meet." Still pondering all this good stuff. jep

  18. That EE Cummings poem is one of my favourites, I've seen it referenced at a few weddings, and for good reason I think!
