January
by John Updike
The days are short,
The sun a spark
Hung thin between
The dark and dark.
Fat snowy footsteps
Track the floor,
And parkas pile up
Near the door.
The river is
A frozen place
Held still beneath
The trees' black lace.
The sky is low.
The wind is gray.
The radiator
Purrs all day

My favorite line is
"and parkas pile up

Which is your favorite line?

I like "hung thin between the dark and dark" - I can't wait for the days to get longer again!
ReplyDeleteI should be clear I like the POETRY of it, not the FACT of it! LOL

ReplyDeleteI'm all about the cozy.
This is a wonderful poem. I am off to look up more John Updike poetry.
Whoa. I just read his "Seven Stanzas at Easter." I am undone.
ReplyDeleteI’m with Anita on the radiator line! Great poem!
ReplyDeleteI love "the trees black lace" but it has several lovely evocative images.
