We already love ourselves plenty.

Hi Friends,

I hope you had a lovely Easter!

Katie is slowly recovering from the flu.  She missed all four days of school last week. ( I fortunately missed out on the flu and just got a terrible cough.)
While Katie did not have the throwing up kind of flu...she at this point feels well, but can not eat without feeling nauseous.  She has always had a sensitive tummy and she feel ill even eating her Easter candy.  That is the real test of illness right there!
She is shocked by how big her pants are on her...
I guess five days of no food will do that to an already tiny girl.

Fortunately we have spring break to get her tummy acclimated to eating again.

Janice and Janet turned 50 yesterday!  They had lots of parties and lots of fun celebrating this great achievement!  Turning 50!  I remember when they were excited to be a decade!

I have always loved this picture of them.
Cute. Cute.

*****

When Katie was sick I bought her a bunny to cuddle.

It worked.

I worshiped :)

Yesterday after church....proudly wearing her 'I worshiped' sticker.
Did you know worshiped can be spelled with one or two 'p's?
We learned that yesterday because Katie did not think it looked right with one.

worshipped....more British I guess.

Over the weekend Katie and I heard Oprah and Joel Osteen telling a story about a woman who looked at herself in the mirror every morning and told herself that she was beautiful...and they both thought that was the coolest thing to do.

And I thought it was shallow and narcissistic.

IMHO

haha

And I said to Katie...
well...let's just say I went on and on in a typical Donna-Mom fashion.

I said.

You should look in the mirror and say,

You are loved.
And.
You were created to go out there and love others.

And then, of course, I said....God doesn't care how beautiful you are!

To which Katie said,

That should be your thing mom.  You should tell people that...and I think she meant...it should be my Ted talk.  hahaha

And I said.

Yeah.

So.  Don't forget it.

You are loved.
You were created to go out there and love others.

Encourage one another,
Donna

p.s.  We did not watch any more of the joel and oprah show.
p.p.s.  My blog title is a thought from Elisabeth Elliot....she thought we loved ourselves plenty...as evidenced by how much we put ourselves first, feed ourselves, thought about ourselves...
I think she was right.

Was Katie checked for Mono? That is one symptom.....not being able to eat fatty foods.

    1. She doesn't have any lymph swelling...so I did not think it could be mono. And she is not sweating a ton either. I remember when my Matthew had mono. Poor guy.

I had mono, no lymph swelling, that I remember, and no sweating. Really, really sore throat and not able to eat fatty foods. It could be just me, though. I guess symptoms vary in different people. I'm sure you know what is best for your babies. :) jw

You are a good mom teaching Katie to focus on others rather than herself. Excellent lesson for the day.

So glad that Katie is feeling better. Have a wonderful spring break!

  4. I just love you. Beauty is as beauty does. Didn't someone wise say that? I'm not sure that will show in the mirror.

I don't think they were referring to "beautiful" in the way society requires us to be "beautiful". I think of it as more of the beauty of our heart and soul. Today, still, many people feel like outcasts because of the way they look rather than knowing they are beautiful inside and out just because they exist. Understanding one is beautiful even though they don't match what the media says/shows came be very empowering.
I also don't think we love ourselves enough at all. If we did we wouldn't do such detrimental things to our health and well being...we let people treat us poorly, eat poorly...authentic self love helps us to do what's best for us and it's not selfish, it doesn't harm another. I agree that the selfish type of love is running rampant but I don't believe that is true love of one's self.

    1. I think if she had said, you are a beautiful person, I wouldn't have been taken back. A beautiful heart and soul are precious. I'm a fan of that :)
True love vs selfish love. Very good things to ponder.

Donna, what an excellent mom you are. I agree with you and Elisabeth Elliot. There is plenty of self-love out there in our selfie-taking, me-first society. How wise to teach Katie to go out and love others. I am very proud of the caring adults my three children have become. I do wish, however, that I had made even more of an effort to teach them to give in ways like serving at soup kitchens, etc. I am reminded of a song I learned in church as a child. Jesus, then others, then you...what a wonderful way to spell joy.

  9. Gosh, I love your words, Donna. Katie has a brilliant mom.
Edie Wadsworth from Life in Grace blog says something in this post that makes me tear up:
    http://www.lifeingraceblog.com/2015/09/inspires-others-baptism-dying-self/
She tells her girls instead of focusing on themselves they need to look at others and say, "There you are." Take care of others first. You and Edie make a good pair.

  10. Happy 50th to your sweet sisters!

And I'm so glad Katie is feeling better. Milkshakes should be in her future. ;)

  11. At the risk of sounding like a stalker (which I am NOT), I want to move next door to you: a cup of sugar when I'm short on ingredients, wet-vac loan when my basement's flooding, and WISE SAGE when my world is hanging precariously from the edge. I think you may be one of the wisest people I know (Blog-know, of course).

Seriously, YOU get it, Donna. You're the real deal, and if it weren't just plain weird (since I don't REALLY know you), you'd be my phone-a-friend call, were I to have to make that 'ONE' phone call.

Hope Katie is on the mend - she emits so much positive energy in your pictures.

  12. Glad to hear Katie is feeling better. The girls and I loved that picture of her in yellow. Adorable!!

When I read 1 Corinthians 13 (for example) I understand it to mean love others, give it away, not having anything to do with how we love ourselves. I do believe we all love ourselves enough and wouldn't it be wonderful to love as we should?!
