Uplifting Poem.

~harvey dunn

Phenomenal Woman

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I'm telling lies.
I say,
It's in the reach of my arms,
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It's the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can't touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them,
They say they still can't see.
I say,
It's in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

Now you understand
Just why my head's not bowed.
I don't shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing,
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It's in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
The palm of my hand,
The need for my care.
'Cause I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

  3. Beautifully written! A poem to empower all young women.....especially those who are caught in the world's perception of what beauty looks like which only speaks destructive lies into their lives.

    Blessings,

Oh, I loved this poem and loved hearing Maya read it. Thank you! I love her line.."They try so much, but they can't touch, my inner mystery." That inner mystery is one of the most wonderful parts of being a woman, I think. Men will never truly understand it. It is what shines out in a female personality that means so much more than fashion and makeup and all the trappings. My grandma was not a beauty, but she had female charm and mystery in abundance. I'm loving this thought today, and Maya's poem that makes me feel so good about being a woman.

  5. That's a great metaphor for her voice. "Listening to her is like listening to a baseball game."

    1. Thank you for sharing your tumblr. I'm not a "member" so I can't comment. Your close ups are stunning. I like the black and white best (the Ferris wheel). Handsome portrait of Eli!

  6. That quiet inner strength comes out in her voice, her words. Loved that about her.

  7. I noted on Facebook that as people post her sayings this past week, I keep reading them in her beautiful voice. Thank you for actually posting it in her voice, too! What a fantastic message.
