Oh my goodness.

I was sad to hear the news that Shirley Temple passed away yesterday.  Such a bright, happy, talented little girl.  She was the most cheerful little entertainer!

The movie Heidi was one of my very favorites.  The sound of her voice, of Grandfather's voice are in my soul.  The scene where she sits at the very little chair at the big table when she first meets Grandfather on the mountain is absolutely darling.  That scary, mean woman who breaks her snow globe....horrible.

When a celebrity dies I really am not moved to tears...usually.  But I must admit looking at this darling face makes me weep a little.

Sweet hearts are hard to say good bye to.   I remember feeling this way about Mr. Rogers.  Some people do make the world a kinder, happier place by being in it.

Rest in peace.

  1. Donna,
I also feel sad when we lose sweet-hearted people like Shirley Temple. I felt the same way when I heard Pete Seeger died, and I still miss Mr. Rogers. When I was a little child, he felt like he was my friend when I watched Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood every afternoon. One of my best memories is watching the show with my little boy years later.

It was sad to hear about Shirley Temple Black's death this morning….even my dad who is not known to care about celebrities, mentioned he was sad to hear about her on TV this morning during our telephone call. She was such a cute little girl and I do remember her movies very well. I think she had an "old soul" even as a child or so it appeared on screen. Mr. Rogers was a staple in our lives for so many years. Our youngest son loved him and would hang on every soft and gentle word Mr. Rogers said. What a good world people can make it when they really care and are talented. My dad said of Shirley Temple, "I don't remember ever hearing anything bad about her." Good way to be remembered. love and prayers, jep

  3. I remember when my girls were little they loved watching old Shirley Temple movies. And my mother absolutely delighted in watching with them. Sweet memories.

These sorts of losses of beloved figures really marks the passing of time.

  5. I felt just the same! I called my dad as soon as I heard and even he had to take a breath before he said "oh my goodness." I just loved that she was a talented little girl who grew up to be an amazing stateswoman. What a role model!

She was special and so talented at such a young age. Heidi was my fave, too. I am always brought to tears by the scene where she and her grandfather narrowly miss one another in downtown Frankfort outside the theater. "Heidi!!! Heidi!!" "Grandfather! Grandfather!!" It's heartbreaking, even though you know how it works out in the end.

Thank you, Shirley, for all the wonderful memories. Godspeed.

  8. I grew up near where she lived, and I remember seeing her at Stanford Shopping Center. My mom had taken me to lunch at this marvelous place called Blum's, and as we were walking out, she was walking in. She told me it was Shirley Temple Black, but how could it be her? She was a grown up! And I thought she would always be a beautiful, happy little girl (-:

    Rest in Peace!

Does anyone else remember the "Heidi Bowl" in 1968 when the Raiders played the Jets and in the final minutes nationally the station cut off the game and put on the movie Heidi? I was watching the game with my dad at the time. He was not happy about the interruption. I was up for watching Heidi again. ;-) love and prayers, jep

I have wonderful memories of my sisters and I watching Shirley Temple in Captain January, Baby Take a Bow, and so many others. They were old movies even then but we loved them. She was an adorable and amazingly talented child who became a classy lady. You are right, Donna, she made the world a happier place just by being in it. And ringlets will forever be "Shirley Temple curls".

  11. I'm nodding my head in agreement with all these lovely comments. "Shirley Temple Curls" makes me smile. Yes!

Seems like this Swiss Miss should rewatch Heidi in memory of her :-)

  12. Shirley Temple Black's death brings back so many warm memories... Heidi, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm were just two of my favorites. And Mr. Rogers, oh, how I loved him. Loved his gentleness with everyone. Every day Graham would say, "I love my Roggie" So sweet. I can hear his little voice.
