Diana....and Matthew Crawley. Downton Abbey Season 3 Finale.

Once upon a time there was a girl who lived in a castle.

She was a Lady.

She married a Prince who would one day be the King of England.

Source: bbc.com via Donna on Pinterest

They went to Scotland for their honeymoon.

They had a baby boy and named him William.  One day he would be King.

While the family was in Balmoral, Scotland.  Diana died in a car accident in a tunnel in Paris.

Aug. 31, 1997

This was my real Downton Abbey.  I watched Diana and Charles for seventeen years, with joy and sadness.  I bought books and magazines so I could see Diana's beautiful clothes and lovely pictures.
I was obsessed.

I stayed up most of the night and didn't leave the television for days when she died.  Family and friends called with condolences.

Imagine this morning when I realized the parallels to the story of Diana and Matthew.

It is not so very far-fetched that a beloved person, beloved parents, beloved spouse dies in a car accident.  Not really at all.

When I read that Dan Stevens wanted to leave the show and that he was killed off just moments after  becoming a father I was furious.  But since I have seen the episode and had time to think about it I do not think the show has 'jumped the shark'.  In fact, after thinking about Diana's life, the show is not really that much of a soap opera after all.  Terrible things happen.  People don't get along. We make big mistakes and little ones.  The wrong people die.  Again and again.

Jillian Fellowes (and writers) gave Dan the most beautiful send off.  They didn't have to.
His dialog was filled with love and joy last night.  It killed Katie and I since we knew what was coming.  We would look at one another each time he said something lovely and she would have a furrowed brow and I would have tears.

Most likely Downton Abbey will be redeemed next season.  We shall see.
I think I will be watching with my heart at an arms length.

Matthew and Mary were my main reason for watching the show.
Yes. It's gonna be an adjustment.

Oh Matthew.  Darling sweet perfect Matthew.

I wonder will Fellows skip ahead a whole year.
I just wonder;

Who will run the estate well now that Matthew is gone.
Who will love Mary just as she is?

We know Carson will play with the baby.  What will they name the baby?

Source: tumblr.com via Donna on Pinterest

What will happen to Tom/Branson? How I felt for him last night.

How I love Mrs. Hughes.

Oh! She can purse her lips like no other!

More things to think about...

Rose stirring things up at Downton Abbey.
Matthew telling Mr. Gregson he should back off.
(Which I completely and entirely agree with!)
Will we see a bride for Tom?
A baby for Bates and Anna?
(Who was so dang darling last night!)
That sad, depressing, couple in Scotland.  eek.
The maid who was even more droll than O'Brien.  Ha!
Daisy and Ivy arm and arm.  (Sweet)
Is Matthew's mother really clueless about the Dr.'s advances or was that her way to
set him straight?
Oh! Mrs. Patmore and that cheeky fellow!  Oh my.
Who knew the word 'slut' was used back then.  (shocking)

I have a feeling Mary will be bitter and mean at first. No one who sees her
like Matthew did.  (and me!)
I suspect by the end of the season we will see a handsome man come into her life.

Here is my list of acceptable actors to play the next love interest for Mary.

They will do.

I'm trying to think of a Midwestern Cowboy type that I would approve of...
Haven't thought of one yet.

I know your hearts are broken and you are mostly shocked.
Feel free to blubber and wail in the comments.

I know to many of you.....they are real.

My sympathies,

  1. Beautifully written, Donna. I've been anxiously awaiting your post and I agree with everything you have said. After a night to process what happened, I feel differently than I did last night.
I didn't know what was going to happen, so was completely blind sided by the death of Matthew....and after reading this article:
    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvandradio/downton-abbey/9825452/Julian-Fellowes-Dan-Stevens-had-to-leave-Downton-because-nothing-is-harder-to-dramatise-than-happiness.html
I completely understand what Julian Fellowes did last night.....
Great episode, let's hope that next season is just a tad bit happier. So much sadness this season.

    1. I read Dan's interview this morning. He is an actor who wants to do different things.
Would a switcheroo like in Bewitched (two Darrens) have been better? I don't think so.

    2. You are so right about the meaning to Matthew's lines in the episode last night -- and harking back to episode one (the Wedding) about his last breath. He was so lovingly written for and it was a lovely tribute to their relationship.

      I'm just sad it's ended.

I think that Mary will be a devoted Mother and perhaps take a hand in helping with the management of Downton. But I can't see her, or Edith with Tom. And hopefully not Rose.

    3. I'm selfish. While I admit that it is difficult to keep happiness interesting on television, I would like to have had just a bit more time to see M&M and their son form a wee family.

Fellowes is fond of so much occurring off set (weddings, funerals, baptisms); I wonder at what point we'll be brought into the story when Season 4 debuts, hopefully down the road a bit as I wouldn't want to see Mary's reaction when learning of Matthew's death.

  2. Your Diana parallels are a perfect starting point. I was the same as you with her. I have photo albums full of clippings from their courtship and wedding, and the birth of the boys. People called to check on me when she died, too. It can still bring tears for me, and helps explain my Anglophilia in some small way.

I have vacillated between sad and ticked all night and morning. I just can't help but wonder if Fellowes could have found some other way, knowing that Dan didn't want to reappear... But truly, what would that 'other way' have been? I don't know. Somehow, I'm more bothered by the addition of Rose (Cousin Oliver ;)) and her family tree -- it certainly sets them up for new story lines next season -- but will we care? I don't know.

I was at a ministry thing with Anne Graham Lotz last weekend and someone asked me how I could watch DA since it was explicit with touchy relationship issues, among other things. My reply? Brokenness. All human drama stems from brokenness, grief, sin, selfishness - watching this family's story unfold is just another way to watch the consequences of brokenness and redemption. Matthew's death, now a few hours later, seems a perfect reflection of those same things. It's just life. It's people dealing with the hand they've been dealt.

I am still very interested to see how the drama of the estate will unfold now that Matthew is gone... And of course, to see how Mary copes and how Edith continues to throw caution to the wind. Maybe Rose will grow on me. We'll see.

No matter how we feel about Matthew's death and/or the manipulative writing, it can't be said that we're uninterested. :)

It seems such a cheap way to create drama. Driving home from the hospital after the birth of his first son? Really? Not a month later?
Who will the writers kill off next, the much loved Mrs. Hughes?
      Yes, I'm annoyed.

    9. He was a beloved character, Matthew -- and it was sad to see him killed on the show. But it would have been just as sad a month later, whatever way it had been written.

It's drama for sure, but not cheap in my estimation. Not at all - it comes from writing all along that makes us care about these people and so sorry to see their story end.

I'm curious, Clayvessel - are you going to continue with the show?

My husband said that too about Mary and Tom...after he said that Tom and Edith would end up together from the earlier scene. I really don't know that either match would be the best. While they've each had their histories woven together through events in the family, I think that Fellowes seems to like bringing in fresh characters from the outside to keep us on our toes. We shall (hopefully) see what direction this goes in the forthcoming season!

  4. It's so sad that Dan Stevens wanted to leave, but in a way I can understand because he did get some of the worst storylines (crippled/not crippled) and dialogue. But, though he's a decent actor, so many of the other actors are better and got the better material. (My opinion, I know others think he's the best actor.) But I wanted Matthew/Mary to have more time!

Julian Fellowes has publicly made very kind comments about Stevens and his departure. However he was also overheard (on purpose?) talking with an actress that had been written off another show. He told her something like "at least they didn't leave you bleeding in a ditch."

Fellowes and exec producer Naeme have made comments about Mary starting fresh and there's already a casting call for a new actor to be her new love interest...but they'll see how they gel before deciding whether the actor will stay. Sigh. But Michelle Dockery has said Mary will cold shoulder men and be very protective of her son. So...we'll see.

Dan Stevens said he does not care if he makes money or becomes more famous...He loves to act and to do interesting parts.
He already came to the states and did a play this fall with Jessica Chastain (The Heiress). He played Morris the ladder climbing cad. Have you seen the movie? It's a good one.

The scene that Mr. Darcy's picture is from is one of my very favorites. Molly and I have often paused the DVD on his face - both when Lizzie is playing and also when she is turning the pages for Georgiana (after saving her from Miss Bingle's nasty remark). The look of love and contained joy on his face is perfection.

I so enjoy your blog though I don't think I've ever commented before. And I so love the DA discussions on Monday! Unfortunately, I had accidentally read a spoiler about last night's episode, and so I knew what was coming. And like you and Katie, my husband and I would glance at each other now and then thinking, "here it comes". It's probably good that I knew ahead of time, otherwise I'd be a mess this morning. Matthew's demise is so sad, on top of the fact that we have to wait so long for the next season!

I completely agree about Mrs. Hughes! She and Carson are a couple of my favorites. Cousin Rose seems unnecessary -- maybe she'll grow on me, though.

    1. Krista - I was looking forward to getting started with Call the Midwife but I'm less so after last night. I'm not sure about your local PBS station, but ours had a big fat fundraising "commercial" after the DA episode finished. I certainly support public television, but am not a fan of breaking their shows into itty bitty scenes sandwiched between much longer fundraising segments. I'm not sure if last night's pitch was the beginning of their Festival time, but as I recall, that time will be soon. Since I'll be trying to get started on this new series by watching the Season 1 episodes prior to the debut of Season 2, I'm not looking forward to having that introduction to characters and storylines be so protracted. One thing I haven't seen mentioned yet is the fallout of the near proposal from the doctor to Matthew's mother. With Matthew's death, it would have been a neat and tidy solution for her to marry him and be off the show save for visiting her grandson on occasion, but that didn't happen. And after all those very wonderful things Matthew said to Mary at the hospital. It was the most lovely scene with the beautiful baby and the light coming through the hospital windows. It honestly helps a little to hear that the actor wanted off the series. I don't understand why, but still, it helps. What about Hugh Jackman as a love interest for Mary? (Mixing my metaphors, sorry ;) I was sure he was going to get shot at the hunting lodge! I cherished each word in their last scene and thought the script was very well done.

Wasn't the scenery gorgeous. I can't imagine what the production costs are. Everyone involved in the production does a superb job. Did you notice the bright spot of color Rose made when standing at her parents' castle entrance, while everyone else was deliberately gray or black?

I've grown as fond of the "downstairs" people as the "upstairs"--perhaps fonder. Class differences are amazingly pronounced in that society.

  23. my favorite line last night... "i wonder if he knows how much joy he brings with him..." this brought me to tears. knowing my own boys, and how much joy they have and will bring, and how my matthew thinks that also, but would never say it.

i kept wondering the last couple episodes what it would be like to have a man in your life so free in saying his feelings... i know how much my matthew loves me. i know it when he looks at me, and when he drives to dairy queen to fulfill my pregnancy sweet tooth. i know how much he adores his son, and how excited he is to do this again. i know it when he plays with asher and rubs my tummy and always lets asher into bed with us... but i rarely hear words that say what he means, what he feels. matthew crawley was so free with his feeling in words, i doubt many men are so free with their feelings.

here are the rest of my thoughts in no particular order...

mary was 8 months pregnant? for the reals?... i was that big at 20 weeks. you should see me now, i am so big it's almost embarrasing.

i now want to go to scotland. i adored the home they were in and the lush green countryside. why do i live in omaha, nebraska?

bates and anna. so sweet. i have always wanted to take a picnic like that.

why are they bringing rose to downton? they must have a plan for her in the script, i am afraid to see what it is.

as much as mary irked me, i adored matthew... i appreciate him loving her in spite of her imperfections. i am sure people could say the same for my matthew and i, he is by far the better half of us. and she finally had chosen to support him over her father. i screamed when that quick shot of the cars driving toward each other came across the screen. (i am too busy these days -sleeping mostly, this working nights thing is taking some adjusting- to read gossip or spoilers and had no idea of anything coming this season). mary's life has just become my worst nightmare.

obrien and that nasty maid... oh dear. i laughed and laughed at drunk mosely.

carson and baby sybil... so sweet.

thomas... his plight breaks my heart, and he is mean and nasty and terrible most of the time. but last night i was so sad for him. what a hard life for him to live. jimmy was nice to try and be his friend.

tom branson... i never disliked him as some did. and my heart broke as he cried with mrs hughes. i loved that scene between them. he must feel so alone. i am glad they gave that maid the boot... some of the women on this show, forward hussies.

oh edith. this story with this man reminds me of that cbs sunday morning story about the reporter whose wife has early alzheimers. as much as he loved her, she did not know who he was, and he had to move on. i am not sure what i would do if i was in this situation. how lonely. how sad. how i wish she could find someone that she can have a normal relationship with. it must be very hard to live in a time when single women are nothing, unable to even provide a life for themselves (and you know i am the anti-feminist).

i like the idea of the dr and mrs crawley... i wonder why she did not.

what am i missing?... i can't remember now.

    2. Melinda, my hubby is not free with words, but he shows how much he loves me in everything he does for me, providing and giving me unconditional support and the gift of his time. I agree with you, a lot of men are not so free with expressing their feelings. They need a script writer like J. Fellows!

But the old saying, actions speak louder than words, has some truth to it.

I have found that the longer we've been married, the more I read between the lines. Also, I just plain ask Jesse about certain things - i tell him I need constant affirmation! it's true.

I appreciate your viewpoint and share your views (except I've long been a Mary fan). Glad you were not spoiled about the end, but it must have been shocking to see it, unspoiled.

One thing no one has mentioned...I think O'Brien may be heading to India with Shrimpy & the Grump. Remember the scene where she tells Grumpy's (Susan?) maid that she no longer has to worry about her feelings or some such, and then she goes over to whisper with Shrimpy's wife? The maid had tried to intoxicate her and only succeeded in lightening up Moseley. :-) She had already told the other maid she thought traveling would be wonderful....

  29. I was just able to watch DT this morning. Most of it I loved or liked or was enthralled as watching but when I saw Matthew heading home in that convertible so happy I knew life as we know it was over and that any minute whatever was going to happen was going to happen, obviously some sort of accident. I was immediately SAD. I loved his love scenes and words with Mary the entire night, especially when he said "I have seen you naked and I have held you and I know you"! Just divine! I loved his mother and the doctor and their whole interchange. Ms. Hughes, love her to death and her scene with Branson was precious. I like the fact that Thomas and Jimmy are friends, why not. Glad they axed that Edna girl...she was gonna be trouble. I do hope Branson finds happiness and yes, Rose would be a better choice than Mary or Edith for sure! Oh my and when Bates looked and commented on Anna dancing...it was magic.
I watched the "Dowager" Maggie Smith last night on 60 minutes...she was phenomenal...I hope to be that alive and feisty when I'm her age!

I also new, by accident, that Matthew was gonna die.

Can you imagine, not knowing the spoiler and seeing it with fresh eyes on Christmas Night in the UK??? Since this was the Christmas Special??? WOW!

I read an interview with Dan Stevens earlier this month, he had talked about the awfulness that was season 2. How it was hard to act the scene when he miraculously rose from the wheelchair, because it was so ridiculous, that it was even harder for the actors around him to do the scene. The shock and awe of it all. It seemed as if that was the time he made the decision to leave the show. He was also kind of tired of period dramas. He also mentioned how much better season 3's writing was but had already made up his mind.

It also seemed, the way the writing went, that Fellows was holding out hope that Dan would change his mind at the last minute.

On to rest of last night. I loved seeing Daisy making friends with the kitchen maid. (having a hard time with names this morning.)

Are they setting up for Daisy and Obrien's nephew to take over the farm? (name again?) When he said he needs to work with food.

Mrs. Patmore sooooo relieved that that man was a creep. loved this scene.

Anna learning the dance for her husband...wonderful. That Anna has been NOWHERE. Not even to Scotland, ever. That would be like me, born and raised in Las Vegas and never making it the 4 hours to the beach in CA. Gives real insight to the different classes.

Edith is making a dumb choice.

Tom and Mrs. Hughes were brilliant, So glad we had so much Mrs Hughes this season.

Uggh, the downstairs at the other house. Made Mr. Carson look jolly! The insult to Anna...

I LOVED the Scottish castle. The rifles on the wall, beautiful. The hunting scout. I thought he was great.

I think that's all. It is enough anyway...

  37. If you chopped off the last minute, it was one of my favorite episodes.

The ugly animosity between Shrimpie and Susan (I had some bad moments watching that. Susan was so ugly in her tirades. I wondered — really, I did — 'is that what I look like when I have the screaming meeemies?' Oh. badbadbad) It is SO uncomfortable to be around warring spouses.

    and

the hilarity of Molesley flinging himself. "They say there's a wild man inside all of us." "Yes, if only it'd stay inside."

Oh, wasn't Scotland gorgeous? I want to go back. The inside of Duneagle was so much like Blair Castle near where we stayed. For a minute I thought it was filmed there. And the hunting scenes seduced my husband back to the screen. The man who last week said, "I'm done with Downton."

Branson is almost completely transformed...he's been gentrified. I like him.

Matthew shone. (pronounced shawn, I love that.) He was so good with Rose last week, and I thought he was spot on with Gregson. Except for telling him to have a proper goodbye. He's been decent with Edith.

Mrs. Hughes. MVP. That scene with Tom. Oh. my. And Mrs. Patmore. And she's Scottish. It must've been hard for her to see the family go to Scotland and stay at Downton.

It's fun to read all the comments. I have guests for dinner tonight. I think I am going to have to turn the computer off so I'm not tempted to read on and on.

Alan Rickman would be a great suitor for Mary, but isn't he a little old for her? Colin Firth. Um, no, I still see him as Mr. Darcy and could not see him in that part. 48. I must say how much I am loving Carson. Such a likeable character, even if he is a stuffed shirt! He just makes me giggle every episode. He would be unbearable as a relation in some ways, but I find his character endearing because he clearly cares about his employers and because of his astonishment at the lack of decorum in his staff.
On a different note, we learned that the staff does recieve wages apart from oom and board (someone asked about ghat a few weeks ago).
I love that the Scottish cousin was called Shrimpy. His wife is crazy-town, so overbearing; wonder what's up with that but I was so pleased Old lady Grantham stood up for her niece.
Something about Bates and Anna just seems off to me. Chemistry? They seem like good friends, not really lovers so much.
Edith is headed down a slippery slope...yikes.
Thomas looked so much more attractive, all beat down with tousled hair and no stinking cig in his hand!
I almost predict that I'll come to prefer Edith to Mary. Edith, with her horrible taste in men, has been likeable of late, and I'm afraid Mary will be very bitter.
Absolutely loved O'Brien's arch rivalry with the other maid.

  49. The word "slut" goes way back, even Chaucer used it, so it goes back to at least the 14th century. It shocked me too. Seems like such a modern word. There is a blog post by someone who took every line and checked it for historical accuracy.

    http://sappingattention.blogspot.ca/2012/02/making-downton-more-traditional.html

I was shocked and saddened to see Matthew killed off. My husband ran in from the next room when he heard me yell NOOOOOOO!! at the TV. However, good movies like good books are driven by conflict or tension, and these two characters were just getting too cosy and happy. It's like Pam and Jim in The Office. Now that they're happily married parents, we're bored. No conflict, no tension...who wants to watch that? So while I'm sad to see Matthew gone, and I didn't actually wish him (his character) dead, I get why they did it. There were so many hints in this episode that Matthew was the only one who could see the good in Mary that I'm predicting she is going to go back to the way she was in Season One and be much more wild, cranky and out of control.

As for Princess Diana, I had a chance to meet her (and Prince Charles)one of those singular moments in one's life. It was a private BBQ in Ottawa, when I worked for our Prime Minister's principal secretary. It was June 21st, 1983, Prince William's first birthday. He, unfortunately, was back in London instead of with his mother, while Diana toured Canada. Truly she was the saddest woman I have ever seen. I was gutted when I heard about the car accident that claimed her life, and numb for days while I watched the coverage. I remember it like it was yesterday.

I was thinking about the scene where the family left for Scotland and Mrs. Crawley followed the train down the tracks and Matthew blew her kiss from the window (at least that's how I remember it). It seemed very sweet and I fleetingly thought of how close they were. In retrospect, it's great that he did that as that was their actual last interaction. And, I know, I know...he's not really dead...or her son, but still - so sweet. Mary Z

    1. Hi Mary, I am awake at 1:15 a.m. thanks to my doggy - argh.

Just typed a reply to this post, and my computer ate it. 2nd attempt:

I rewatched this episode yesterday a.m. (Tuesday) and also noticed how Matthew said goodbye to his Mom at the train tracks, this sweet moment and it stood out to me too.

That why I enjoy re-watching -- this show has so many layers and each time I see something new or special.

OK hopefully going to be able to go back to sleep. :-/

I forgot about when Mary talked of scratching Matthew's car... and hugs to you Donna, for your parents.

  59. 191 comments, Donna! You are Ms. Blogger extraordinaire! :-) I'm still angry (just left a post on "Mary will be fine" 5 minutes ago), but this post was a bit of a salve. And my comment about senseless and too soon; I'm preaching to the choir... My heart aches that you lost your beloved parents as a child. {sigh}
It's on the wrong post... but I usually take salad - a maindish type of salad with plenty of protein in it. And rolls. (There's usually someone taking lasagna the same night!) I hope they don't think it's icky.

I'm glad this post made you feel a little better Pam.
I'm sorry about your cousin. Really. That must have made this show ending terrible.
I think knowing about it ahead of time...made it easier for me. I was pretty ticked when I first read about Matthew's death. Like I said...I was all set to write the 'jump the shark' post....
but when I thought of Diana...it's just not that rare is it?

  60. I am not sure if anyone mentioned this...but what about Patrick? He came back for a couple episodes in season 2 and then left. And I think he was supposed to be Mary's originally planned husband? Will he come back and fill in that role?

As far as I can recall (and I definitely could be wrong), that storyline just sort of faded away, but never resolved. It just seems odd for it never to resurface again.

  61. I always had the impression he was NOT Patrick, just a person who took on his identity? I might be remembering incorrectly. I am re-watching Season One right now, maybe I'll soldier on (pardon the pun) and watch Season 2 as well.

    1. I am pretty sure it was not confirmed. Edith seemed to believe him and she was angry with Mary for not giving him a chance. But then, it seemed he just left and it wasn't made clear either way.

But I could have easily missed something. I often have to re-watch episodes as I get confused and miss things that were said.

  62. Almost to 200. :)

My absolute favorite moment of the episode was when Carson had baby Sybil and told Mrs Hughes "I remember holding her mother just like this.". Tears came to my eyes as I thought of the sweet reality of life which passes so quickly. Though fictional, the family and servants at DA represent a time when stability was more the norm and one could live one's entire life in one place surrounded by multiple generations of a family. Mr Carson's life changes so little from day to day, year to year, decade to decade and he LIKES it that way. The older I get, the more I appreciate that kind of stability. :)

I DO think Mrs. Crawley knew what the doctor intended and headed him off at the pass to spare them both the embarrassment of a proposal she would not accept. I'm anxious to see how she handles Matthew's death, but I anticipate it will b with quiet strength. Will the Dowager even show kindness to her grieving nemesis?

    1. After re-watching the scene, it's even better. Carson says "I was just thinking of Lady Sybil when she was this age."
Mrs. Hughes replied, "All we can do now is cherish her bairn."
Carson straightened up and said, characteristically, " Well, there's no need to get sentimental.". Hahaha.

Such a wonderful show! I realized yesterday the last show where I felt so invested in the characters was Gilmore Girls. A completely different kind of show, of course, but equally good in character development, writing, directing, and acting.

    2. Thank you for explaining Mrs Crawley and the doc. It took nearly 200 comments to get my question answered. I think you are right. I had a feeling that is what was going on.

Now I have to look up bairn.

      :o)

    4. Oooh we are past 200 - I totally agree with Sandy's synopsis of Isobel Crawley and Dr. Clarkson. I mentioned it above (probably on Monday) but I wonder now that she has lost her only son if she'll be more open to the companionship and probable marriage proposal that Dr. Clarkson almost blurted out?

Bairn is Scottish for baby, child.

Gilmore Girls was one of my very favorite shows! I miss Lorelai, Rory, Luke and the rest of the Stars Hollow characters. A new show (not nearly as good, but cute) has several of the actors from GG in it - Bunheads.

Also, I agree with Sandy's take on Mrs. Crawley and the good doctor's proposal.

Also, I agree with Sandy's thoughts on Mrs. Crawley and the good doctor. I love the word "bairn". It reminds me of the Outlander series. :)

  64. Mom,
Just got done watching seasons 2 and 3 back to back over the past couple weeks. I enjoyed season 2 more than season 3. I think as a guy I enjoyed the back drop of the war, and how the snooty family bucked up and contributed their house and their time to the war. This is why I thought it ridiculous that Homeland won the Emmy over Downton Abbey for Outstanding Drama Series. Homeland is exciting, but it is so ridiculous. It makes Matthew's recovering from injury instantly look normal.

Anyway, I don't necessarily have a problem with Matthew dying, it just stinks. Him and Mary was the best part of the show. The direction they were going to take Downton and the future of the family was interesting to me.

I can't stand O'Brien and Thomas' meddling with Bates, although at times this year (in prison) he didn't seem quite as heroic and noble as he has before. Carson and Hughes are great, seems like they keep hinting at something between them, but of course they are proper servants and probably won't fool around. Although I'm sure the Granthams wouldn't have a problem with it. My point is I don't think the servant storylines are good enough to carry the show, so obviously they have to do something with Mary. I suppose Tom Branson will marry someone who we have been introduced to already. And I really have no idea what they will do with Edith.

No matter what, I love "the Dowager's" one-liners, and Mrs Patmore is great. Anna has been good with Bates too, so maybe that will become more of a positive focus.

    Patrick
