The sprinkler twirls, the summer wanes, the pavement wears Popsicle stains.
The playground grass is worn to dust, the weary swings creak creak with rust.
The trees are bored with being green.
 Some people leave the local scene and go to seaside bungalows and take off nearly all their clothes.
 "August," a poem by John Updike.

  1. Thank you, Donna. It is a beautiful day here; I was able to squeeze in a morning break at work and elected to walk outdoors. What a blessing :)

  2. I don't normally read poetry - but the poems you pick are compelling and amazing :) I always feel like you are teaching me something, and I so appreciate that! Yesterday, a haiku - and today - and Updike poem. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

  4. I saw this poem posted yesterday by a lovely lady named Nan, who has a blog called "Letters from a Hill Farm". I thought you might enjoy it.

    The poem is a bit long, so I'll just quote the first bit.

    It's by Helen Maria Winslow and titled

    August

    "The yellow goldenrod is dressed
    In gala-day attire;
    The glowing redweed by the fence
    Shines like a crimson fire;
    And from the hot field’s farthest edge
    The cricket’s soft refrain
    With mellow accent tells the tale
    That August’s here again..."

    I agree with Gina, I love your poems posted here. All part of what makes it a lovely place to visit.

    A lovely photo of Katie. And is the other little gal you? Darling :-)

  6. You look so Dutch and cute and perfect in that picture, Donna!

    My hubby's first day back in the classroom is today. After all my concern with the transition to having him home, we had a lovely summer. It is toooo quiet here!

    We had grey, beachy skies this morning, and finally the blue is peeking out. It's time to get outside.

    Happy Wednesday, all,
    Di

  7. I echo everyone when they say thank you for the poems. I don't read much poetry so I always enjoy what you post. August is usually hazy, hot, and humid at this time, right now, right here. But, it's presently 74 out, overcast, and looking like rain. We are heading to the park to walk before the rain arrives. It's my 6th child's 16th birthday today and she really wants to go to the park and ride her bike.

    Have a great day everyone!
